Darkest Africa
Native forces in all their glory.
Darkest Africa
Brave explorers in a variety of jungle gear.
Darkest Africa
More brave explorers. I had fun with the ladies' dresses.
Darkest Africa
Even more explorer shots.
Darkest Africa
Lord of the Jungle with his assistant approach a tent guarded by a lone askari.
Darkest Africa
Female askaris from Dixon's Dahomey range. I haven't got the foggiest clue if the colors are authentic or not.
Darkest Africa
Female headhunters from Dixon's Dahomey range. They are very much the same figures as the female askaris, except with extra heads and a little less clothes.
Hairy armpits add authenticity...
Darkest Africa
More female askari. Same figures, different paintjob. And that's what I like about these irregular types.
Darkest Africa
Dahomey ladies arrayed before the tent.
Darkest Africa
Dahomey askaris from Dixon. There are actually more females than males in this range, a refreshing change.
Darkest Africa
Dahomey askaris. Same figures, different paintjob.
Darkest Africa
Dahomey askaris in their full glory.
Darkest Africa
Foundry askaris. These were the first figures I did after a long hiatus - and it shows.
However, you have to start somewhere...
Darkest Africa
A closer view of the Foundry askris, making my mistakes even more obvious.
Darkest Africa
Another view of Foundry askaris.
Darkest Africa Colonials
British colonial askaris. I was going for khaki, but it turned out too dark. Bummer...
Darkest Africa Zanzibari
Zanzibari slav... recruiting service ready to embark on an expedition.
Darkest Africa Zanzibari
Baluchi mercenaries of the Rainbow Guard. Each member wears a colored sash with, single color for the seven troopers and multicolored for the leader.
Darkest Africa
Fearless natives arrayed to defened their homes against vile colonial oppressors.
Darkest Africa Zanzibari
The command group complete with "assistant"!
Darkest Africa Zanzibari
Another view of the Rainbow Guard, a group of Baluchi mercenaries.
Darkest Africa Zanzibari
Askaris. I clocked myself doing these about 45 minutes a pop, counting effective working time only. The actual time is much longer because I use washes a lot and they need to dry properly before work can continue.
Darkest Africa Zanzibari
Askaris. I really liked doing the jackets.
Darkest Africa Zanzibari
A blurry shot of some character models. I suck at photography even more than I suck at painting.
Darkest Africa Zanzibari
Zanzibari raiders arrayed before a village.
Darkest Africa Zanzibari
Heavily armed askaris.
Adventurer
This is a Foundry freebie. It didn't turn out too well.
Darkest Africa
Native leaders.
Darkest Africa
Native leaders. The standard is made out of wire, some plastic skulls and a piece of wool string. The skulls might be from HeroQuest, but I'm not quite sure.
Darkest Africa
Native archers. These are actually from Old Glory Egyptian range.
Darkest Africa
Some Old Glory Zulus ready for action.
Darkest Africa
A big group shot.
Darkest Africa
Another useless group shot.
Darkest Africa
And yet another.
Darkest Africa
The white man needs his shade, or he won't be white for long.
Darkest Africa Colonials
Stalwart defenders of the Empire ready to take on all comers, support free trade, keep a stiff upper lip and all that...
Darkest Africa Natives
Bearers, or baggage as they are affectionately known.
Darkest Africa Bodyguard
Fierce female bodyguard unit.
Darkest Africa Bodyguard
Another shot of the female bodyguards.
Greek Cavalry
A lone greek cavalryman from Essex. The horse looks horrible up close, another one of my failed experiments.
Gunfighter
These shots are also the first test of my new Nikon Coolpix 2000. My previous brushes with digicams have been disappointing, but this one blew me away.
Gunfighter
Ha! Crossdraw holster!
Gunfighter
Two gun action.
Gunfighter
Red jacket, green vest... any relation?
Gunfighter
This guy looks like a show-off, so I painted his gun silver. My daughter insisted on putting the rock on the base.
Gunfighter
Looks pretty much like the other guy with moustache... well, they were all inbreeding anyway.
Gunfighter
Some time after painting this guy, I realized the clothes are actually cavalry uniform or something like that. Oh, wel....
Gunfighter
I named him "The Finn" for some reason.
Gunfighter
I should have taken a photo of the other side, because I a little trick with the hat.
Gunfighter
I call him Mr. Beans. Note the moustache again. Do these guys all have the same barber? Oh, wait, there is just one barber.
Gunfighter
Note how clean he licks his plates. Those beans sure are mighty tasty!
Gunfighter
Ok, this is better. Note the sickly yellow skin color. These were the first figures I did after a long hiatus, and some things like shading flesh color took some time to relearn.
Gunfighter
Would you like buckshot with that, sir?
Gunfighter
Pinkerton man. I actually resisted the urge to paint these in Technicolor pink. Unfortunately, the black wasn't so good either. Black is surprisingly hard to do well.
Gunfighter
Another Pinkerton man. Should have given him a colorful vest for contrast.
Gunfighter
Mounted indians from Geronimo's band.
Gunfighter
Keeping the focus off the horse's head took some work.
Gunfighter
From this angle, he looks like a celtic fanatic on horseback.
Gunfighter's horse
See the horse's head.
Gunfighter's horse
It's a really nice horse, honest. The owner used it only for Sunday raids.
Gunfighter
Okay, here's the rider too.
Gunfighter
Again, a more colorful vest would have been nicer.
Gunfighter
Black hat, white duster... is he good or bad? Argh! Can't tell!
Gunfighter
The red shirt is pure coincidence, honest.
Gunfighter zombie
He's seen better days.
Gunfighter zombie
These are actually Foundry figures. They did one pack of these around the time Deadlands debuted.
Gunfighter zombie
Funny, I was better at shading rotten flesh than healthy.
Gunfighter zombie
More undead menace straight from boot hill.
Gunfighter zombie
I tried to do all of these in earthy tones, as if they'd been buried for some time and got dirt and mud all over their clothes while clawing to get back above the ground.
Gunfighter zombie
I like these poses, they're rather zombie-like.
Gunfighter zombie
Is he angry because someonle stole his boots?
Greek peltasts
Part old style Foundry, part Essex, some with old Grenadier plastic shields. Can you spot which is which?
Greek peltasts
These were actually meant to be unarmored hoplites I think, but I needed peltasts so I painted them as such.
Greek archers
I liked doing the tunics.
Greek javelinmen
These are all old style Foundry.
Greek javelinmen
Back when Foundry was moving to blister packs, they had a dump sale, half price for remaining stock not in blisters. I bought a big bunch of figures, which started my collections of not only these Greeks, but Imperial Romans, 19th Century Africans and Bronze Age Europeans. Half of these are still unpainted.
Greek slingers
Old style Foundry again. Surprisingly nice considering there are only three poses.
Greek slinger
I did most of these in standard off-white tunics, but two got red ones for leader material.
Greek light infantry
Too small to really see anything.
Greek cavalry
The ones with the crests are from Black Tree, the Boeotian helmeted one is Essex. Frankly, the BTD figures are not among their best, but they were easily available and ok.
Greek cavalry
Not known for horsemanship, nevertheless a few cavalry is necessary for any army.
Greek cavalry
When I started painting these, I realized I didn't really know what horses looked like. I used to paint them all kinda brown all over.
Greek cavalry
So I went out and bought a book on horses... (I was actually planning to buy an issue of Hevoshullu (a magazine for horse-crazy pre-teen girls), but couldn't find one)
Greek cavalry
...only to realize that pretty much anything goes. Still, I think these are much better than my earlier monotone horses.
Greek hoplites
The phalanx is here!
Greek hoplites
As you might notice, I ran out of real Foundry shields, so I substituted old Games Workshop plastic Dark Elf shields. Can you tell which is which?
Greek hoplites
Overhead view.
Greek hoplites
The trumpeter is Essex because I didn't feel like buying bunches of Foundry command packs.
Greek hoplites
Hmmm... this phalanx seems to be a few guys short.
Greek hoplites
United State of Athens!
Greek hoplites
It's a mask, honest! That's a Ral Partha figure, and unlike the centaurs, very nice. Except that I totally botched the shield. Well, ok, it's supposed to look horrific.
Greek hoplites
Spartans. Yes, I know their shields should be polished bronze but this looks much better.
Greek hoplites
Closeup of the Spartans.
Greek hoplites
Hey, the trumpet guy took my place in the front rank. Let me back in!
Greek heroes
These are actually the newer Foundry Greeks sculpted by Mark Copplestone.
Greek hero
Ok, I did not name him "The Finn". I do maintain some semblance of historicity.
Greek hero
Argh! The sun is shining in my face! I actually got the idea for this color scheme from how Foundry did their argonauts. Nice contrast to the mostly white regular hoplites.
Greek hero
To shave or not to shave...
Greek leaders
I tried to paint this trio like they're done in Foundry Compendium, but sadly failing ofcourse.
Greek leader
After I took these pictures I learned that you can actually turn off the flash and get good macro shots even though the camera is complaining about lack of light.
Greek leader
I have nothing in this hand... the dagger is hidden under the cloak.
Greek leader
Somehow Kevin Dallimore did this yellow and green scheme much better... After these guys I was supposed to have finished all of my Greeks (a very rare thing) but then Black Tree gave me some free sample Greek figures with my WAB Alexander book, aaargh!
Gladiators
Another useless group shot.
Gladiators
These are from Black Tree. I little more poses would have been nice, but very good figures nonetheless.
Gladiators
I tried to give half of them gold-on-silver and the other half silver-on-gold schemes, but unfortunately the gold-silver contrast isn't that good.
Gladiators
Not entirely historical, perhaps, but nice anyway.
Gladiator
Laquearius, or the guy with the lasso to his friends.
Gladiators
Gone fishing...
Gladiators
Hoplomachus and a barbarian. Note how the spear is tied to his wrist? I guess they learned something from Spartacus reruns.
Gladiator
Dimachaerus, aka him with the two swordsies. Doing the bootlaces was not fun.
Celts
Slingers in official photoshoot.
Celts
This spring's color is green.
Celts
White shirt, blue j... pants and an attitude. Nothing changes.
Celts
I didn't dare to try stripes and checks with the first batch.
Celts
Blue shirt, grey pants. How many variations can we get?
Celts
Red pants, no shirt! This is getting exciting.
Celts
The kinda-yellow shirt came out better than I expected, but still could have been given a bit darker wash.
Celts
Ah! Grey pants!
Celts
Blue shirt, green pants.
Celts
Look at those muscles.
Celts
The moustache is too dark.
Air game
Free-for-all training session.
Air game
Going for the initial head-on.
Air game
Wisely, one of the pilots does not have an uncontrollable urge to run into opponents.
Air game
The cards were your 'throttle and stick'.
Air game
Movement is done according to the templates.
Air game
If you sight someone's tail, you get a a shot.
Air game
That's a roll manuever.
Air game
I'd been shot down at this point, and the cautious pilot was hunting my killer.
Mustangs
The Zekes peel off to hunt the infidel dog.
Mustangs
Yep, that's the BattleMasters map. Possibly the best part of that game.
Mustangs
I guess you can't really see the maneuver markers in the photos.
Mustangs
Your days are numbered, Imperialist Pig!
Mustangs
Haha! Down in flames! With my last shot, on the last turn...
Njetponimai City
Vulture View(tm) of Njetponimai City.
Njetponimai City
View down the main street. The ground looks a bit boring, haven't had the time to ruin the sheet yet.
Njetponimai City
North City view. The building at the end of the main street is from Miniature World Makers and it's actually latex. Very nice, but slightly too small for 28mm figures.
Njetponimai City
I bought a bunch of these ArmorCast boxes when a local gamestore was dumping them.
Njetponimai City
View down the Main Street.
Njetponimai City
Some additional realism.
Njetponimai City
The wooden buildings were considerably more work than the adobe buildings... small wonder I've got only four of them to the ten adobe ones.
Njetponimai City
South City.
Njetponimai City
The Diamond gang sets out.
Njetponimai City
The Club gang creeping about.
Njetponimai City
Ok, we're set. Come and get it!
Njetponimai City
Mr. Red from the Diamond gang camps in the yard.
Njetponimai City
Mr. Black and Doc Gray.
Njetponimai City
The Kid covers the corner while Bob Jones just cowers.
Njetponimai City
John Dough dashes across the street.
Njetponimai City
The Kid and Bob Jones. Bob decides to creep up towards Mr. Red's position. Bad call, as it turns out.
Njetponimai City
Doc Gray joins Mr. Red.
Njetponimai City
John Dough getting into position.
Njetponimai City
Ouch! Mr. White flanks The Kid.
Njetponimai City
The Kid backs up Bob.
Njetponimai City
John pops Mr. Black one in the belly.
Njetponimai City
This is looking bad. Both The Kid and Bob are down, looks like Frank Ernest has to handle this side on his own, one against three.
Njetponimai City
Did I say three-on-one? I meant four-on-one ofcourse. Frank is bravely holding the fort against Doc Gray and Wyatt Burpe.
Njetponimai City
Mr. Red joins Mr. Black smoking out Joe Smith, who was broken his gun (pink marker).
Njetponimai City
The end. Our brave fellows are downed by the scurrilous corpse-looting Doc Gray. The first actual casualty in the game too.
15mm Pikemen
These are the first 15mm figures I've done, ever.
15mm Pikemen
A friend gave me a box of these because he was never going to get around to painting them.
15mm Pikemen
I started these around June, and finished in November. Same year, though. As you can see, painting 15mm is really fast.
Greeks
And the other two.
Greeks
Just when I thought I had painted all my greeks, Black Tree gave a batch of free ones. Well, here they are now.
Greeks
Black Tree greek archers.
Greeks
Closeup of two hoplites.
Betty
G4M Betty from NavWar.
Betty
Front view. As far as I can tell, the glazing on this model does not correspond to any actual model of G4M, but I painted like it's on the miniature anyway.
Betty
The bulges suggest early models, though.
Space Hulk
Marines advance.
House in the hills
Argh! No! Another useless top view...
House in the hills
I bought a pile of these pieces without really thinking about the layout.
House in the hills
The walls came in two batches. For some reason, the first batch contained walls with the creeping vines while the second batch was all clean -- even though there's only one order code for these walls.
House in the hills
The corner piece length is NOT one half of straight piece, which limits the layout options somewhat.
House in the hills
The house. These are done almost entirely in Winsor & Newton tube acrylics... except the white bits, which are mostly cheap indoor latex and the blue curtain, which is done in Miniature Paints with a dash of Warzone blue ink.
House in the hills
These are all Hovels 25mm scenics.
House in the hills
Doing the plankwork on the house was actually rather irritating...
House in the hills
Another view of the house. I guess I could have defined the blinds better, but I was again getting the stage where I just wanted the damn thing to be finished.
House in the hills
Since I did not paint up my new batch of samurai figures yet, I dug up some old ones for action shots.
House in the hills
The nice ones are pre-painted ones I bought from em-4. The crappy ones are some Dixon minis I originally did almost 20 years ago, redid maybe 12 years ago and got ruined by a batch of bad varnish!
House in the hills
The ishidori have maybe 5 levels of shading... not that you'd notice, they turned out much too dark.
House in the hills
The monk is mine, but I can't remember whether I actually painted it or not. Could have been a friend of mine who actually has artistic talent.
House in the hills
Samurai in colorful armor.
House in the hills
Showdown in the sunset.
House in the hills
The gate... the gate...
Duffer's Rescue
The forces assemble.
Duffer's Rescue
Duffer, caught on patrol not two weeks ago, is being held hostage in the small fort.
Duffer's Rescue
A strange mixture of architectural styles, this small compound proved to be the focal point of the game.
Duffer's Rescue
The Pathan leaders contemplate the fate of the captive. Note the torturer (the one in read pants).
Duffer's Rescue
Pathan sharpshooters practice every Sunday afternoon.
Duffer's Rescue
The forces of oppression gather.
Duffer's Rescue
Free tribes of the hills are ready to defend their homes and fields. Especially the opium fields.
Duffer's Rescue
Traitorous dogs in ferengi service advance into the bush.
Duffer's Rescue
Sailorboys and Egyptian auxiliaries set out.
Duffer's Rescue
The Imperialist Pigs start their march.
Duffer's Rescue
Egyptians (actually East Africans, but did you really expect the Imperialists to know the difference?) spread and scout.
Duffer's Rescue
The redcoats advance.
Duffer's Rescue
Camelry scouts ahead.
Duffer's Rescue
We're British, we'll use the road like civilized people.
Duffer's Rescue
Surprise! First ambush of the game!
Duffer's Rescue
Unfortunately, sheikh al-Garth's plan did not quite work.
Duffer's Rescue
Camelry rides to the rescue.
Duffer's Rescue
And receives fire from another unit of brave Pathani tribesmen.
Duffer's Rescue
Unfortunately, the brave African lads prove a bit too tough to handle.
Duffer's Rescue
Sheikh al-Garth has some explaining to do!
Duffer's Rescue
Run away! Mommy mommy!
Duffer's Rescue
Let's hide in that bush!
Duffer's Rescue
The redcoats spread out.
Duffer's Rescue
Brave Baluchi mercenaries emerge from hiding and fire a deadly surprise volley -- missing with all shots! Allah is not with us today!
Duffer's Rescue
Duffer is being tortured. The ordeal is inhuman even the khan can not bear to watch.
Duffer's Rescue
The British, on the other hand, have no trouble hitting on their return volley. Ouch!
Duffer's Rescue
Not looking good for the defenders of homeland...
Duffer's Rescue
Another surprise in store for the infidel...
Duffer's Rescue
The sailors stop to finish off wounded natives.
Duffer's Rescue
More steadfast advance.
Duffer's Rescue
al-Garth manages to regroup and return for another shot at the ferengi.
Duffer's Rescue
One final shot... an untrustworthy dog had disappeared with the powder magazine rendering the ammo supply of the defenders untenable.
Duffer's Rescue
The final moments are close at hand...
Duffer's Rescue
Soon my friends, soon...
Duffer's Rescue
The final ambush. These guys even have ammo left...
Duffer's Rescue
Again, the tribesman accuracy is not all that it was hyped up to be.
Duffer's Rescue
Auxiliaries handle the left flank alone.
Duffer's Rescue
The British return fire is deadly.
Duffer's Rescue
Another grand volley with no hits at all...
Duffer's Rescue
Close range shooting. Despite appearances, both sides lacked the balls to charge.
Duffer's Rescue
The assault begins. African renegades rush in to stem the flow but to no avail.
Duffer's Rescue
The Red Wave is pouring over the hill.
Duffer's Rescue
In theory, it looks ok. In practice, the defenders are all out of ammo at this point.
Duffer's Rescue
Ok, one final shot.
Duffer's Rescue
The relentless horde advances... slowly...
Duffer's Rescue
The Africans beat back the remnants of al-Garth's troops.
Duffer's Rescue
The Baluchi rush in to help.
Duffer's Rescue
Furious fighting around the compound.
Duffer's Rescue
The situation was rather chaotic.
Duffer's Rescue
Are we too late to help our comrades?
Duffer's Rescue
The khan is executing a clever tactical withdrawal.
Duffer's Rescue
Everyone's piling around the compound, the final moments are at hand.
Duffer's Rescue
In a brilliant display of heroism, the defenders of one of the houses rush out into the courtyard.
Duffer's Rescue
The lone scout harasses Baluchi sheikh.
Duffer's Rescue
For tonight we have some square dancing and family games in the courtyard.
Duffer's Rescue
I guess you could call that a flying carpet...
Duffer's Rescue
The torturer is left behind.
Duffer's Rescue
Baluchi lose their resolve and melt into the hills.
Duffer's Rescue
Even the sailors see some action.
Duffer's Rescue
Ok boys, it's over. Let's go home.
TYW: The Plastic
Pikemen, front view. The pikes are underlength, but they usually are. Full length pikes are unwieldy on the table anyway.
TYW: The Plastic
I have no idea what the drum etc. is supposed to be like. If it's not historical, I guess he stole it from a travelling circus or something. The officer got a blue coat and trousers to differentiate him from the brown/gray commoners.
TYW: The Plastic
One Imperial unit arrayed for battle.
TYW: The Plastic
You see a bit of white in the bases because the glue isn't quite dry yet.
TYW: The Plastic
I hadn't done any figures in this scale previously, so I tried a variety of techniques. All failing abysmally, ofcourse.
TYW: The Plastic
And here's the useless overhead view!
TYW: The Plastic
Skirmisher, front view. These were in the first batch I did, using my normal base-wash-drybrush method. Note the hat brim on the rightmost man -- I had trouble with paint peeling even after a layer of varnish.
TYW: The Plastic
Skirmishers, rear view.
TYW: The Plastic
Musketeers giving fyre, front view. I lopped off the musket rest on the middle guy (accidentally).
TYW: The Plastic
Musketeers, side view. You can see the fuzz on the barrels created by my ill-advised attempts to remove the flash.
TYW: The Plastic
Even though it's a bit out of focus, you will note that the leftmost guy is missing half of his sword. I lopped it off accidentally while carving out the undercuts.
TYW: The Plastic
Musketeers loading, front view. The ones with the gray coat are from my second batch, when I tried a base + drybrush technique. Not much better.
TYW: The Plastic
Musketeers loading, back view.
TYW: The Plastic
Musketeers giving fyre. Oh, I guess I forgot to mention that these are Revell 1/72 figures.
TYW: The Plastic
Musketeers, another view.
TYW: The Plastic
Musketeers, back view. I clocked a little over 30 minutes per figure doing these. Not that you'd notice it from the results...
TYW: The Plastic
Oi, watch where you poke that thing! These were a bit hard to fit on the base, should have selected the poses more carefully.
TYW: The Plastic
Musketeers loading, rear view. You can see some strands of glue clinging to the figures because they were based after painting. Normally I base before painting. That's not a major problem, they'll wear off eventually.
TYW: The Plastic
Pikemen's asses. These were from the third and final batch. I decided I needed more contrast and tried the Foundry/Dallimore method of painting in the highlights. Naturally, I suck at anything that requires actual artistic talent.
TYW: The Plastic
Another angle on some pikemen. There was much more variety in the musketeers, for whatever reason. I think there were only four distinct poses of pikemen.
TYW: The Plastic
And the asses again.
TYW: The Plastic
Second rank pikemen, front view. My only defence is that I did not use a brush smaller than size #1.
TYW: The Plastic
Second rankers, buttshot.
TYW: The Plastic
More pikemen to the fray.
TYW: The Plastic
And from behind...

TYW: The Plastic
The command section. The flag has the eagle on the other side only, there's just no way I could paint it on the other freehand.
TYW: The Plastic
Command section, rear view.
TYW: The Plastic
Ok, here's the flag. Good thing the design was molded as raised detail.
TYW: The Plastic
Another buttshot. Why did I take this one?
House in the hills
More Hovels samurai housing goodness. This is the old house.
House in the hills
Another view of the old house. And I still dislike doing the plankwork...
House in the hills
Yet another view of the old house...
House in the hills
Country inn, I think. I like how the roof came out.
House in the hills
Considering that I prettu much just splurged some color on the sacks, they look ok.
House in the hills
Candlemaker's store, I believe, is what they call this model.
House in the hills
This one was much much faster to paint because it doesn't have that white stuff and planking.
House in the hills
Here are all the Hovels samurai houses on display.
House in the hills
Another view of the samurai houses.
Celts
By sticking lots of minis in the same frame, at least some of them are in focus...
Celts
More slingers to the fray.
Celts
The slingers are back in too.
Celts
These are pretty much the same as the previous bunch of celtic slingers.
Celts
Hmmm... someone's trying to slip away...
Celts
The poses are a bit limited, but still better than some manufacturers.
Celts
The obligatory overhead view.
Celts
So that's 18 slingers ready for action. Now for warriors...
Celts
More celtic slingers, this time venturing outside. I was supposed to paint stripes on these guys, but I forgot.
Celts
Aargh! I'm out of focus! The white stuff on the background is not the sky, it's a pile of snow.
Zulu War
Critical moment. Unfortunately, the natives fail to make the most of it.
Zulu War
Attack from the right flank.
Zulu War
Last gasp of a dying nation.
Zulu War
Oopsie. Zulus catch sailorboys out of formation.
Zulu War
It's a long way to Tipperary...
Zulu War
A bit of a mess.
Zulu War
British cavalry runs into some zulus.
Zulu War
Zulus up close. Autofocus grabbed the flocking, ofcourse.
Zulu War
33rd Bent Barrelshire?
Zulu War
I think there's something happening down there, but I can't quite make out what it is.
Zulu War
The thin red line.
Zulu War
Tactical redeployment.
Zulu War
Brave boer scouts stemming the tide.
Zulu War
British wagon train creeps forward under the protection of the thin red line.
Zulu War
Clashing with the natives.
Zulu War
Brave redcoats head for the hills, leaving the engineers to face the zulu onslought nearly alone.
Celts
Celtic warriors, this time from Black Tree. The photo is a bit fuzzy.
Celts
Same celts, somewhat clearer shot.
Celts
This time around I felt confident enough to do stripes.
Celts
You can spot the ones I epoxied to bases instead of hot gluing like I usually do - with hot glue I can terraform the base and hide the edge of the miniature's base.
Celts
For some reason, I like the barechested ones. They're a bit faster to paint and you can get good effects on the chest and back muscles.
Celts
Ok, here's the back then.
Celts
I think the small round one is actually a cavalry shield, but given the irregular nature of the celts, I don't think anyone will mind.
Celts
These are substantially larger than the Foundry celts I also have. I guess I'll have to make them the elite bodyguard or something.
Celts
And the obligatory overhead view...
Celts
The latest batch of BTD celts.
Celts
I didn't bother with the stripes this time around.
Celts
Same figure, different shields and colors.
Celts
I even did the eyes this time. They do look a bit funny, though.
Celts
More brave warriors to the fray. Now I have 38 painted celts, 70 or so to go.
Celts
Shield transfers are from VVV.
Celts
The brave warrior looks to the god before battle,
Russian tanks
Touched up Russian tanks parked by the new ruins.
Russian tanks
A T-34/85. This is actually a real Russian diecast metal toy in 1:43 scale.
Russian tanks
A 100mm AT gun from the same set of toys.
Russian tanks
Another view of the T-34/85 with a SU-100 visible in the foreground.
Russian tanks
An SU-100. I did some minor touchup with these, but I tried to keep it minimal. Basically, it's a light grey drybrush all over, dark brown/grey paint on the running wheels and a few details picked out in black, plus a matt coat which helps a lot in killing the toylike glare.
Russian tanks
A BTR-60. The original gun was broken, so I had to make a replacement.
Russian tanks
Here are all the tanks so far.
Empire forces
Or pseudo-landsknechts, if you prefer.
Halberdiers
These are all from BattleMasters, and they're rather crappy figures to be blunt.
Halberdiers
Closeup on halberdiers.
Cannons
Yes, I was really this cheap.
Standard Bearer
This figure is actually from the first edition BattleSystem box.
Crossbowmen
Again, from BattleMasters.
Crossbowmen
As you can see, they are really crappy miniatures. They take just as long to paint as good miniatures, if not longer, but the results are never as good. I wonder why I bothered...
Crossbowmen
These are original Citadel release of these feudal crossbowmen, sculpted by the Perry twins. Later the same models were released by Foundry.
Crossbowmen
Citadel was experimenting with plastic bits for figures - these crossbows are plastic. As I understand it, the Founry re-issues have metal bows.
Archers
Again, these are from BattleMasters. I've actually painted everything from the set except for the Chaos thugs, orcs and goblins. Scary, huh?
Archers
Closeup on the horrible BattleMasters archers.
Ancient Galleys
These are 1/1200 galleys from NavWar.
Ancient Galleys
Yes, I know they left the sails away when fighting, but they just look so much better with the sail.
Ancient Galleys
I think these are actually Byzantine dromons.
Cossack
I got this as a freebie from Foundry.
Cossack
Yes, the color scheme is intentionally goofy.
Russian tanks
Newer additions to the diecast horde.
Russian tanks
3 inch ATG. Note that this item has a different shade of green than all the other items in this range.
Russian tanks
Another view of the 3 inch ATG.
Russian tanks
Rear view.
Russian tanks
BTR-60. The soft plastic gun sucks, but I didn't bother to change it anyway.
Russian tanks
Here are the two new BTR's.
Celts
More barbarian horde. These are the old Foundry Celts sculpted by the Perry twins.
Celts
Shield transfers are from VVV. They're rather good, actually.
Celts
Reverse colors. In a sense uniforms are easier to paint en masse.
Celts
Naked fanatics. These are very fun and quick to paint.
Celts
The shirtless guys.
Celts
More Bare Bottom British.
Celts
More 25mm celtic fury from the Perry twins. The Foundy molds are wearing out, though...
Celts
Closer view of the latest batch of celts.
Celts
This time I did all the remaining shields in one go. Noticeably faster that way.
Celts
More useless overhead views.
Celts
I really didn't feel like doing stripes and checks. The celts are beginning to feel like a chore.
Celts
Musician and standard bearer.
Celts
There are way too many of these ceremonial bronze shields in the Foundry packs.
Celts
Actually, I didn't make any shields in one color only, even though that would probably have been a good addition.
Celts
Excellent transfers from Veni Vidi Vici.
Celts
The shield surfaces suffer from some crackling caused by the gloss varnish I put on them before applying the transfers. On the other hand, the transfers went on really smoothly this time, with no silvering.
Celts
More celts to the fray.
Celts
This lot brings my count of painted celts up to 74. Still way short of a 2000 point WAB army...
Celts
I actually liked these guys with the cast-on spears. Glueing spears on is such a pain in the butt...
Celts
More stalwart spearmen.
Celts
The guy on the right has a really loose grip on his shield... I really should break it off and re-glue.
Celts
In this batch, I tried some more natural faded browns. I was afraid they wouldn't have enough contrast with the skin tones, but they're ok.
Celts
Fortunately, I'm not quite as sick of these guys as I were of hoplites when I finished my Greek army.
Celts
The guy with the head is a PG version basically because I was too lazy to do blood effects. Besides, I'm too old for corny blood effects.
Celts
Still more celts.
Celts
The color balance turns yellow like this when there's not enough light (like when I'm blocking the lamps). I really shoud set up a studio.
Celts
The guy on the right is from a command pack, so I don't actually have multiples of him.
Celts
Shield up or shield down, that is the question...
Celts
More command staff.
Celts
And after all this, I might scrape together 1,000 points of basic barbarians... I don't envy the guys who do 3,000 point barbarian hordes.
Celts
Latest batch of brave celtic warrior straight off the painting desk.
Celts
Only one more batch of basic warriors, then it's just the nobles and chariots -- until I buy some cavalry, that is.
Celts
As usual, these are old Perry twins era Foundry celts.
Celts
I have too many musicians and standard bearers for WAB... I can see the need to paint even more celts around the corner.
Celts
The end is nigh... this was the last batch of regular foot troopers - until I bought an extra pack of Black Tree celts.
Celts
See the obligatory Boudicca figure.
Celts
These are all old Foundry British celts, done by the Perry twins long, long ago... and the molds are wearing a bit thin.
Celts
You might notice that I have mixed Black Tree and Foundry shields - the BTD ones are noticeably thicker.
Celts
And here's the Iron Lady herself.
Celtic chieftain
A closer view at the hair.
Celts
The crackling effect on the shields is from a gloss varnish gone bad. Oh well...
Celts
I used brownish tones in this last batch. Probably should have done so earlier.
Celts
I dropped and lost one shield, therefore the guy on the left has a plastic Grenadier shield. eM-4 used to sell these for next to nothing, especially compared to the ripoff prices most manufacturers ask for loose shields.
Celtic standard
I have far too many command groups for the amount of warriors that I have - in WAB terms, that is. Must chuck a few extra standards in the back row, I guess.
Celts
More celtic warriors.
Celtic warband
Few... the infantry are done.
Celtic warband
A couple of druids lead the 4B: Bare Bottom British Brigade.
Celtic nobles
Foundry celtic nobles.
Celtic druids
Apparently this attire is not historical, but based on some misinterpretation of roman historians.
Celtic fanatics
In their fleshy glory.
Celtic fanatics
When these guys are in Osprey plates, there's always a shield or another guy or errant plantlife or whatever obstructing the view of their privates. It was a really harrowing experience trying to find a reference how to paint period pubic hair.
Celtic fanatics
Another pair of these sensible fellows.
Celtic fanatics
I don't really know if the pose is really historical, but that's how shield goes given that arm position - the handle is horizontal.
Celtic fanatics
One of them even wears a helmet.
Celtic fanatics
For some reason, I had lots of trouble with my new batch of Veni Vidi Vici transfers. They wouldn't stay on, perhaps because I did not put on a coat of gloss varnish before I applied them.
Celtic fanatics
I rushed this batch a bit, and it shows. Also, doing a batch of 28 is too tiring. Should stick to 8-12 at a go.
Celtic fanatics
I rather like the bearded fellow. He was also a single in the random assortment of celts I got.
Celtic fanatics
Yeehaw! Geronimo! Hmmm... what would these guys yell?
Celtic nobles
Foundry nobles. You will note that these guys have somewhat more sensible poses for the shields. Perhaps the Perry twins did more reading into the subject...
Celtic nobles
I was really fed up with celts by the time I got to these guys, I really didn't do them justice.
Celtic nobles
They had to have one with the birdie-helmet...
Celtic nobles
I like the bowler helmets. It makes them sort of more British...
Celtic nobles
Two more for the command group.
Celtic noble
Did you notice it yet? I did part of the nobles in the basic colors of British uniforms from various periods as a lark.
Celtic chariots
Boudicca leading the Black Tree tribe to battle.
Celtic chariots
These would complete my celtic army if hadn't bought a cavalry horde from Foudry...
Celtic chariots
The warrior queen herself. I painted her in the same color scheme as the foot version. Afterwards I noticed that this was supposed to be Boudicca and the foot version is actually Cartimandua. Oh, well...
Celtic chariots
Black Tree chariots in action. I actually ordered two heavy and two light chariots from them, but they sent me four heavy ones instead. The difference is minimal, but the identical crews get a bit boring.
Celtic chariots
Yiihaa!
Celtic chariots
The base is a mixture of static grass and coffee grounds.
Celtic chariots
A better view of the horses. I made a conscious effort to make the horses different and not the usual brown all over deal.
Celtic chariots
More horses. Two of the chariots were missing the yokes, so I made new ones from wire.
Celtic chariots
And the obligatory overhead view. These are based on 80x80mm bases. I was torn between that and Vis Bellica's 60x120mm, but went with this anyway. You could put a few chariot runners on the sides.
WAB Test Drive
The moment of decision is at hand.
WAB Test Drive
Crunch! The Greeks charge in but roll spectacularly badly... they rout, are run over and the strategos throws in the towel.
Vis Bellica Test Drive
Here's the table before the troops arrive.
Vis Bellica Test Drive
Initial deployment. The leader bases could look nicer...
Vis Bellica Test Drive
Given the open ground, almost all the bases were spotted straight away.
Vis Bellica Test Drive
The Greeks are out to get more stones for their temple under construction.
Vis Bellica Test Drive
Heroic celts approach.
Vis Bellica Test Drive
The celtic battleline is driven back by the Spartan onslought. The points values for these killer elite are seriously out of whack.
Vis Bellica Test Drive
See them run. See them fail every morale test. The celts have zero stamina.
Vis Bellica Test Drive
They don't fare that well even against the light troops.
Vis Bellica Test Drive
Spartans in hot pursuit.
WAB Test Drive
The Greeks and the Celts are preparing for battle.
WAB Test Drive
Initial deployment.
WAB Test Drive
Battleline edge closer.
WAB Test Drive
The Greek strategos foregoes rank bonus for a very wide formation.
WAB Test Drive
The celtic chariots charge in.
WAB Test Drive
Furious celts eager to get their hands on some greek... olives. Yes, olives.
WAB Test Drive
Oopsie, looks like there's a bit of a traffic jam here.
WAB Test Drive
And the chariots run away after being thoroughly pelted by the peltasts...
Command Decision
The Germans ready for battle.
Command Decision
Here are the Russians.
Command Decision
One German Battalion.
Command Decision
The other German battalion. In the actual games, these were mixed up to provide two kampfgruppes.
Command Decision
Russian infantry.
Command Decision
Russian scouts I guess. Made a glorious charge of the light brigade.
Command Decision
Russian reinforcements.
Command Decision
The village that didn't really play any part in the game. Well, it provided a rallying point for the russians.
Command Decision
Germans lined up. The wisdom of this formation is questionable...
Command Decision
The brave motorcycle infantry.
Command Decision
German advance about to discover the russian positions.
Command Decision
German flanking move about to be ambushed. Luckily they weren't anybody important...
Command Decision
First few russian discovered.
Command Decision
Stugs ready to pounce the enemy.
Command Decision
Panzer IV's advancing.
Command Decision
Driving up the hill. The last shot I managed before I ran out of batteries... and then my spares were dead too. Well, the Germans won anyway, they can do propaganda shots later.
British
These are Black Tree Zulu war British, plus one chap from Foundry Darkest Africa. The one in khaki, ofcourse.
British
I'm not quite sure about the uniform details, but I guess these pass the three foot test.
British
Most of these are from the character pack, which is why they are a bit wild and varied.
British
Oi! Get back down.
British
I based them with sand and static grass this time. I guess it looks a bit better than static grass alone.
British
The obligatory overhead view. Can you spot the epaulet piping?
Sikhs
Foundry sikhs from the Darkest Africa range. Excellent figures.
Sikhs
Apparently they wore something like this in eastern Africa.
Sikhs
Maybe it would look better without painting the pagri, but I did it anyway.
Sikhs
Not much variety in the poses though.
Sikhs
The obligatory overhead view.
Sikhs
Fighting for the empire. I used real tea in the bases.
Queen Victoria
This is the Foundry LE figure.
Njetponimaj City II
On the count to three...
Njetponimaj City II
Oopsie, out of ammo.
Njetponimaj City II
Everyone's hiding behind the houses. Where's the glorious charge along the main street?
Njetponimaj City II
Didn't we already see the obligatory overhead view?
Njetponimaj City II
Back alley action.
Njetponimaj City II
Desperadoes corner a cowpoke.
Njetponimaj City II
You ain't getting my bottle!
Njetponimaj City II
Cowboys executing tactical withdrawal.
Njetponimaj City II
The dead box.
Njetponimaj City II
The city sleeps quietly, un aware of the troubles ahead.
Njetponimaj City II
The ground is made from old curtains.
Njetponimaj City II
High noon at the main street.
Njetponimaj City II
Combatants use the barrels and crates lying about as cover.
Njetponimaj City II
Two-on-One.
Njetponimaj City II
Cowboys getting ready to pounce.
Njetponimaj City II
The obligatory overhead view.
Njetponimaj City II
Desperadoes hiding behind the outhouse.
Greek musicians
I bought these entirely to add more flexibility for my WAB Greek lineup.
Greek musician
The skirt is done in abbreviated Foundry two-tone style.
Greek musician
This one has a more traditional wash-based painting on the cloth.
Greek musicians
The two musicians side by side for comparison purposes.
Hoplite
I think this one is the best of the bunch, but that does not mean I'm happy with it.
Hoplite
Rear view.
Hoplite
Side view.
Hoplite
The face is completely mucked up.
Hoplite
The final highlight is probably too light.
Hoplite
Rear view.
ACW Fleet
Here's my ACW riverine forces. All are NavWar 1/1200 models.
ACW Fleet
I've these for some years, but I just recently based them.
ACW Fleet
The Maury gunboats. This was supposed to be a class of 100 mass-produced guboats, but only these two actually saw service.
ACW Fleet
Blockade runner.
ACW Fleet
The famous CSS Virginia. Or Merrimack, if you prefer. But it certainly wasn't the only vessel to change owners in this war.
ACW Fleet
CSS Manassas, or maybe it's a crash landed UFO?
ACW Fleet
Another nifty CSS ram, the Albemarle.
ACW Fleet
Classic sternwheeler riverboat, USS Forest Rose.
ACW Fleet
USS Tyler, a timberclab sidewheeler gunboat.
ACW Fleet
USS Essex, pretty typical casemate ironclad.
ACW Fleet
The classic USS Monitor, the first turreted warship in history. Even though it was primarily a land war, ACW saw a lot of firsts in naval warfare.
ACW Fleet
USS Chippewa, a gunboat.
ACW Fleet
USS Chippewa from the other side. I really don't know what those outrigger thingies are.
ACW Fleet
USS Cairo, another typical casemate ironclad.
Greeks
Three hoplites and one unidentified light trooper.
Skirmisher
This is the first mini I did entirely in the Foundry/Dallimore 3-color style. Unfortunately, the results aren't that hot.
Skirmisher
Side view of the skirmisher.
Skirmisher
Another view of the skirmisher.
Hoplites
These are Essex figures. They are also an experiment in the Foundry 3-color style, but the end result looks more like something from a Navigator ad.
Hoplite
Thankfully no face visible...
Galleys
A selection of ancient galleys spanning from the Persian wars to Byzantine. I had these half-finished on my desk for a very long time... a couple of years. Now I just have to decide how to base them...
Galleys
I decided to leave the masts off. I actually had the masts painted a long time ago, I just didn't glue them in. The blob of paint badly covers the hole.
Galleys
Byzantine dromons. These are all NavWar 1/1200 models, but the casting quality is really spotty.
Galleys
Another downside of having these on my desk for some years is that I no longer have any idea which models these are supposed to be.
10mm experiments
At this point I got confident enough to do some simple shield designs.
10mm experiments
A couple on Normans mixed in I think.
10mm experiments
The thing I hate about these is the same I hate about crappy figures: It's sometimes impossible to tell whether the figure is supposed to have e.g. boots or pants. But then again in this scale is basically becomes how you paint it.
10mm experiments
More dark age infantry. These would look better with more variety, but this assembly line painting is not really suited for that.
10mm
I painted these to see if I could so 10mm at all. Thanks Chris for the figures.
10mm
This particular set took about a year to complete.
10mm
Frankly, I have no idea which manufacturer's figures these are.
10mm
It's a mix of various dark age types.
10mm
This is from a newer set. I basically did these in an hour starting from black undercoat.
10mm
Though this is the second set of 10mm I've painted, there's already some improvement.
10mm
It takes a totally different mindset to paint these compared to doing 28mm figures.
10mm
Yes, Watson, these are dipped. While I'd never subject, well not normally anyway, 28mm figures to such a treatment, these puppies seem to be built for it. This is mahogany shade, a darker dip might work better.
10mm
The other new stip of 10mm figures.
Duelists
These two are from the Redoubt Three Musketeers line.
Duelists
Unfortunately the shot is out of focus. The damn camera kept wanting to auto-focus to the building. Anyway, this is done in Kevin's 3-color style using Foundry paints. The blade of the rapier fell off immediately, so I replaced with steel wire.
Duelists
Another duelists, in more earthy tones. I'm not too happy how the blades turned out.
Duelists
They are presumably french, so they won't mind us showing their backsides, I guess.
Duelists
Should have painted the scabbard black...
Duelists
I'm not too fond of this pose.
Random minis
Ordered a random bag of minis from North Star. I quite like the gladiator, the germans and persians are quite usable but four headless samnites? I understand it was a random grab bag, but I still expected complete figures. Nevermind the missing shields, but missing heads as well?
Carthaginians
They have arrived! These are all Renegade 28mm figures.
Portuguese Cacadores
Taking aim.
Portuguese Cacadores
Here are my new cacadores.
Portuguese Cacadores
These are very old school Foundry figures originally sculpted by the Perry twins.
Portuguese Cacadores
In classic style, there is only a single trooper pose.
Portuguese Cacadores
Hmmm... this picture looks familiar.
