Greek Cavalry
A lone greek cavalryman from Essex. The horse looks horrible up close, another one of my failed experiments.
Greek hero
It took me about 18 months to finish these Greeks. If someone tells me I don't have enough figures for a game, I'll hang him by his pteurges!
Greek peltasts
Part old style Foundry, part Essex, some with old Grenadier plastic shields. Can you spot which is which?
Greek peltasts
These were actually meant to be unarmored hoplites I think, but I needed peltasts so I painted them as such.
Greek archers
Again, mostly old style Foundry with the odd Essex figure thrown in.
Greek archers
I liked doing the tunics.
Greek javelinmen
These are all old style Foundry.
Greek javelinmen
Back when Foundry was moving to blister packs, they had a dump sale, half price for remaining stock not in blisters. I bought a big bunch of figures, which started my collections of not only these Greeks, but Imperial Romans, 19th Century Africans and Bronze Age Europeans. Half of these are still unpainted.
Greek slingers
Old style Foundry again. Surprisingly nice considering there are only three poses.
Greek slinger
I did most of these in standard off-white tunics, but two got red ones for leader material.
Greek light infantry
Too small to really see anything.
Greek centaurs
These are old Ral Partha. Not very good figures, stiff two-dimensional pose (just one), but it's surprisingly hard to find centaurs that fit a mythical theme (instead of anything-goes fantasy).
Greek centaur
This one had a miscast shield, so I carved it into something of a crescent shape. I also bent the sword to make the figures just a little bit different.
Greek cavalry
The ones with the crests are from Black Tree, the Boeotian helmeted one is Essex. Frankly, the BTD figures are not among their best, but they were easily available and ok.
Greek cavalry
Not known for horsemanship, nevertheless a few cavalry is necessary for any army.
Greek cavalry
When I started painting these, I realized I didn't really know what horses looked like. I used to paint them all kinda brown all over.
Greek cavalry
So I went out and bought a book on horses... (I was actually planning to buy an issue of Hevoshullu (a magazine for horse-crazy pre-teen girls), but couldn't find one)
Greek cavalry
...only to realize that pretty much anything goes. Still, I think these are much better than my earlier monotone horses.
Greek hoplites
The phalanx is here!
Greek hoplites
As you might notice, I ran out of real Foundry shields, so I substituted old Games Workshop plastic Dark Elf shields. Can you tell which is which?
Greek hoplites
Overhead view.
Greek hoplites
The trumpeter is Essex because I didn't feel like buying bunches of Foundry command packs.
Greek hoplites
Hmmm... this phalanx seems to be a few guys short.
Greek hoplites
United State of Athens!
Greek hoplites
It's a mask, honest! That's a Ral Partha figure, and unlike the centaurs, very nice. Except that I totally botched the shield. Well, ok, it's supposed to look horrific.
Greek hoplites
Spartans. Yes, I know their shields should be polished bronze but this looks much better.
Greek hoplites
Closeup of the Spartans.
Greek hoplites
Hey, the trumpet guy took my place in the front rank. Let me back in!
Greek heroes
These are actually the newer Foundry Greeks sculpted by Mark Copplestone.
Greek hero
Ok, I did not name him "The Finn". I do maintain some semblance of historicity.
Greek hero
Argh! The sun is shining in my face! I actually got the idea for this color scheme from how Foundry did their argonauts. Nice contrast to the mostly white regular hoplites.
Greek hero
To shave or not to shave...
Greek leaders
I tried to paint this trio like they're done in Foundry Compendium, but sadly failing ofcourse.
Greek leader
After I took these pictures I learned that you can actually turn off the flash and get good macro shots even though the camera is complaining about lack of light.
Greek leader
I have nothing in this hand... the dagger is hidden under the cloak.
Greek leader
Somehow Kevin Dallimore did this yellow and green scheme much better... After these guys I was supposed to have finished all of my Greeks (a very rare thing) but then Black Tree gave me some free sample Greek figures with my WAB Alexander book, aaargh!
Greeks
And the other two.
Greeks
Just when I thought I had painted all my greeks, Black Tree gave a batch of free ones. Well, here they are now.
Greeks
Black Tree greek archers.
Greeks
Closeup of two hoplites.
Greek musicians
I bought these entirely to add more flexibility for my WAB Greek lineup.
Greek musician
The skirt is done in abbreviated Foundry two-tone style.
Greek musician
This one has a more traditional wash-based painting on the cloth.
Greek musicians
The two musicians side by side for comparison purposes.
Hoplite
I think this one is the best of the bunch, but that does not mean I'm happy with it.

Hoplite
Side view.
Hoplite
The face is completely mucked up.
Hoplite
The final highlight is probably too light.
Hoplite
Rear view.
Greeks
Three hoplites and one unidentified light trooper.
Hoplites
These are Essex figures. They are also an experiment in the Foundry 3-color style, but the end result looks more like something from a Navigator ad.
Hoplite
Thankfully no face visible...
Hoplites
The shields are permanently fixed, which eases assembly.
Hoplites
Finally finished my last hoplites.
Hoplites
I actually had greek shield transfers, but they were too large for these shields so I had to resort to whatever I had on hand. Can you guess where this came from?
Hoplites
These are Foundry's army-style figs. For hoplites I think they are pretty nice, even though the poses are very limited.
Hoplites
I think I need to get a command blister or too, because I'm lacking trumpeters for the army.
Hoplites
The obligatory overhead view.
Hoplites
More shield detail. These are actually from Revo's fantasy decal range.
Greek storage
The hoplites in a jar. Well, not a jar but an old Swedish army ammo box.
Greek storage
Another view of my hoplite army in storage. The box bottom is lined with magnetic sheeting, which is almost good enough to hold figures based on metallic washers. Still wouldn't trust this for a car trip.
Greek Commander
This is the freebie that came with War and Conquest rules
Skirmishers
The robes have been washed with gray. These guys are actually pretty close to completion.
Skirmishers
Closeup on one of the javelineers.
Skirmishers
More javelineers for the greeks.
Skirmishers
The obligatory overhead view.
Skirmishers
These are actually Wargames Factory Numidians. That box is very versatile, they can be built as pretty much any ancient light troops around the mediterranean.
Skirmishers
I also did a couple of hornblowers. However, I'm not too happy with how the flesh turned out. I should have touched it up after the wash.

Ancient Skirmishers
Old WGF ancient skirmishers. Very generic figures.
Ancient Skirmishers
I did this batch almost completely in contrast paints.
Ancient Skirmishers
It's pretty ok for bulk troops.
Ancient Skirmishers
The plastic is pretty fragile, though. I had two bows and one sword snap while painting...
Ancient Skirmishers
I built most as archers.
