WWII
It's always nice to see people play a pretty game. Especially so when it's not WarSnatcher.

WWII
I think it was in 20mm.

WWII Russians
These are all from Black Tree. Personally, I think this is one of their best ranges.
2003-10-17
WWII Russians
I read painting guides, bought the Osprey book, browsed websites and in the end I just said: Aww, whattaheck, they're all kinda brown.

I gave them all brown boots. I have no idea where I got that info from...

Degtaryev LMG... not surprisingly, we Finns called it "Emma". The actual magazine is bigger though, it's roughly the size of a LP record.

Ah! Much better Ivan. Now if you could only store that setting...
2003-10-17

Black Tree does packs of kneeling and prone soldiers. The kneeling ones are nice, but the prone ones are a bit hard to use in gaming... even though it is a very realistic pose.

Zero. Can't tell if it's A6M2 or A6M5. These are all H&R planes, I bought them long ago and they were in plastic bags with no identification. Sooo... I compared the miniatures to silhouettes in reference books: "Is this just a bad model, or is this supposed to be something else?"

Russian tanks
An SU-100. I did some minor touchup with these, but I tried to keep it minimal. Basically, it's a light grey drybrush all over, dark brown/grey paint on the running wheels and a few details picked out in black, plus a matt coat which helps a lot in killing the toylike glare.
2004-07-25

Russian invasion
More Russians invade. The uniforms are done in two different shades of brownish, but you can't really tell after the shade has been applied...
2012-02-04
Russian invasion
I basically dipped these. Just blocked in the basic colors and slapped on some Vallejo sepia shade. No attempt to paint eyes or most of the other small details. For the Russian color scheme it works reasonably well. Not too convinced it'd work for bright Napoleonic uniforms or even the ubiquitous ancient off-white linen.
2012-02-04

I really should have given him a bit more attention...

Hmmm... who is this guy aiming at? Most of the figures are Black Tree, but this guy is a sample from Bolt Action. Very nice minis, but I never ended up getting more because I already had too many queued up.
2012-02-04

There's really only four poses with two headgear variations, but for bulk troops they are ok.
2012-03-14
Mr. Russia Competition
Old skool Black Tree Russian I did years ago. This is the way I used to do basically every mini. Each color is washed and highlighted separately, the eyes and other small details are done even if not in too great detail. This level of detail takes me about an hour per figure done on batches of about 10 minis. The brown boots are probably incorrect, but there was huge variation in Russian equipment anyways and they could be civilian items.

And here are the three contestants. On the left, Assault Group quickie, in the middle Black Tree quickie and on the right and old skool Black Tree model, all in glorious 28mm.
2012-03-14
Mr. Russia Competition
Closeup of the Assault Group mini. They actually come with bayonets attached, which is period accurate (the Russians gave bayonets to basically everybody, but very few scabbards or frogs), but unfortunately this guy lost his already in the blister.
2012-03-14
Mr. Russia Competition
Closeup of the Black Tree mini done in quickie style. I just blocked in the basic colors, drybrushed the metal slightly and then slapped Vallejo Sepia shade all over it. No attempt was made to include details like eyes or buttons.
2012-03-14
Mr. Russia Competition
No miniature review would be complete without a butt comparison. Let's face it, as the owner this is the side you usually wish to see on the table.
2012-03-14
Mr. Russia Competition
Another closeup of the quickie Assault Group mini. Limitations of the technique are most prevalent in the hair, I think.

2012-03-21
Die Amerikaner sind gefinished!
Was Zum Teufel! I had these guys lying about for a long time unused. The thing is, most of the Battlefront infantry boxes come with some extra miniatures. What they don't come with is extra bases, so these guys were leftovers from my German Test Platoon. Until I just bought some extra bases...
2012-03-26

I was in such a hurry to get these finished I forgot to take photos... well, here they are.

Some howitzers and mortars. After I had done these, I just heard in a podcast that mortars in 3rd edition are supposed to be based differently... or was it just 60mm mortars? Aww, shucks...

Yes I know I was supposed to be done with my US tank company, but then I saw these for sale for a good price and...
2012-04-24

2012-05-15
Russians under the brush
NKVD. These guys could double as police in some games. Hmm....
2012-05-15
Russians under the brush
Sailors. They have the padded jackets, so that's khaki. The rest of the uniform is supposed to be black actually, but I painted it dark navy blue just to give it a little character.
2012-05-30
Russians galore!
NKVD section. I'm not quite sure about the caps. NKVD officer caps are sky blue with red band, but no way these guys are all officers. Most likely rank and file wouldn't have had caps, but since these figures came with them (which does set them nicely apart from the normal sloggers) I decided to paint them khaki with red band.
2012-05-30
Russians galore!
AT rifles. These I fixed with the TAG guns.

2012-06-07
Partisans
I didn't have the heart to wash the gal, so I flexed my three color muscles a bit. I really need to get more color sets, it's getting a bit boring with one blue, one green and one red. Pretty good selection of brownish tones, though.

Field Gun
It's a gun! It's actually a Russian 3 inch field gun, but as a 1/35 kit it's somewhat overscale. However, I think it'll stand reasonably as a heavier gun, 4 inch or maybe even 6 inch piece.
2014-03-09
Field Gun
I thought this would be a simple kit to build, but I was mistaken. It has lots of etched detail parts, most of which I ended up leaving off.
2014-03-09
Field Gun
I also left off the seats, because they indicate scale and also because they were really flimsy.

Trucking Along
I painted up some transport for my 15mm armies. These are all WWII trucks, but they're mostly generic enough to be usable in Vietnam or even modern games.
2014-06-17
Trucking Along
The obligatory overhead view.
2014-06-17
Trucking Along
These are British Matador trucks from Zvezda. They're really a bit too flimsy for gaming use. I had to pour piles of glue on the undercarriage to stiffen it up a bit.
2014-06-17
Trucking Along
These are American 2.5ton trucks. I think basically the same trucks were still in use in Vietnam and even the 80's ones don't look much different.
2014-06-17
Trucking Along
Another view of the Matadors. I painted the canvas covering in another color just to break the monotony.
2014-06-17

German light trucks. Actually I'm not quite sure why I bought these. They might have been on sale. Basic dunkelgelb plus grey cover.

Armored Train
I did these mostly with my airbrush. The camo came out pretty muted. I think the Vallejo dunkelgelb base is too dark for this scale, I think I'll lighten it up next time.

2014-09-20
Tanks Galore
These are quite cute, though the T-70 was definitely a better tank.
2014-09-20
Tanks Galore
A pair of starter box StuGs. I hate the resin schürzen, it's impossible the keep them good. Maybe I'll replace them with pasticard if I'm feeling industrious...
2014-09-20
Tanks Galore
Again the Vallejo dunkelgelb is a bit too dark.
