Celts
Celtic slingers in all their manly glory. 28mm Foundry.
Celts
Slingers in official photoshoot.
Celts
This spring's color is green.
Celts
White shirt, blue j... pants and an attitude. Nothing changes.
Celts
I didn't dare to try stripes and checks with the first batch.
Celts
Blue shirt, grey pants. How many variations can we get?
Celts
Red pants, no shirt! This is getting exciting.
Celts
The kinda-yellow shirt came out better than I expected, but still could have been given a bit darker wash.
Celts
Ah! Grey pants!
Celts
Blue shirt, green pants.
Celts
Look at those muscles.
Celts
The moustache is too dark.
Celts
By sticking lots of minis in the same frame, at least some of them are in focus...
Celts
More slingers to the fray.
Celts
The slingers are back in too.
Celts
These are pretty much the same as the previous bunch of celtic slingers.
Celts
Hmmm... someone's trying to slip away...
Celts
The poses are a bit limited, but still better than some manufacturers.
Celts
The obligatory overhead view.
Celts
So that's 18 slingers ready for action. Now for warriors...
Celts
More celtic slingers, this time venturing outside. I was supposed to paint stripes on these guys, but I forgot.
Celts
Aargh! I'm out of focus! The white stuff on the background is not the sky, it's a pile of snow.
Celts
Celtic warriors, this time from Black Tree. The photo is a bit fuzzy.
Celts
Same celts, somewhat clearer shot.
Celts
This time around I felt confident enough to do stripes.
Celts
You can spot the ones I epoxied to bases instead of hot gluing like I usually do - with hot glue I can terraform the base and hide the edge of the miniature's base.
Celts
For some reason, I like the barechested ones. They're a bit faster to paint and you can get good effects on the chest and back muscles.
Celts
Ok, here's the back then.
Celts
I think the small round one is actually a cavalry shield, but given the irregular nature of the celts, I don't think anyone will mind.
Celts
These are substantially larger than the Foundry celts I also have. I guess I'll have to make them the elite bodyguard or something.
Celts
And the obligatory overhead view...
Celts
The latest batch of BTD celts.
Celts
I didn't bother with the stripes this time around.
Celts
Same figure, different shields and colors.
Celts
I even did the eyes this time. They do look a bit funny, though.
Celts
More brave warriors to the fray. Now I have 38 painted celts, 70 or so to go.
Celts
Shield transfers are from VVV.
Celts
The brave warrior looks to the god before battle,
Celts
More barbarian horde. These are the old Foundry Celts sculpted by the Perry twins.
Celts
Shield transfers are from VVV. They're rather good, actually.
Celts
Reverse colors. In a sense uniforms are easier to paint en masse.
Celts
Naked fanatics. These are very fun and quick to paint.
Celts
The shirtless guys.
Celts
More Bare Bottom British.
Celts
More 25mm celtic fury from the Perry twins. The Foundy molds are wearing out, though...
Celts
Closer view of the latest batch of celts.
Celts
This time I did all the remaining shields in one go. Noticeably faster that way.
Celts
More useless overhead views.
Celts
I really didn't feel like doing stripes and checks. The celts are beginning to feel like a chore.
Celts
Musician and standard bearer.
Celts
There are way too many of these ceremonial bronze shields in the Foundry packs.
Celts
Actually, I didn't make any shields in one color only, even though that would probably have been a good addition.
Celts
Excellent transfers from Veni Vidi Vici.
Celts
The shield surfaces suffer from some crackling caused by the gloss varnish I put on them before applying the transfers. On the other hand, the transfers went on really smoothly this time, with no silvering.
Celts
More celts to the fray.
Celts
This lot brings my count of painted celts up to 74. Still way short of a 2000 point WAB army...
Celts
I actually liked these guys with the cast-on spears. Glueing spears on is such a pain in the butt...
Celts
More stalwart spearmen.
Celts
The guy on the right has a really loose grip on his shield... I really should break it off and re-glue.
Celts
In this batch, I tried some more natural faded browns. I was afraid they wouldn't have enough contrast with the skin tones, but they're ok.
Celts
Fortunately, I'm not quite as sick of these guys as I were of hoplites when I finished my Greek army.
Celts
The guy with the head is a PG version basically because I was too lazy to do blood effects. Besides, I'm too old for corny blood effects.
Celts
Still more celts.
Celts
The color balance turns yellow like this when there's not enough light (like when I'm blocking the lamps). I really shoud set up a studio.
Celts
The guy on the right is from a command pack, so I don't actually have multiples of him.
Celts
Shield up or shield down, that is the question...
Celts
More command staff.
Celts
And after all this, I might scrape together 1,000 points of basic barbarians... I don't envy the guys who do 3,000 point barbarian hordes.
Celts
Latest batch of brave celtic warrior straight off the painting desk.
Celts
Only one more batch of basic warriors, then it's just the nobles and chariots -- until I buy some cavalry, that is.
Celts
As usual, these are old Perry twins era Foundry celts.
Celts
I have too many musicians and standard bearers for WAB... I can see the need to paint even more celts around the corner.
Celts
The end is nigh... this was the last batch of regular foot troopers - until I bought an extra pack of Black Tree celts.
Celts
See the obligatory Boudicca figure.
Celts
These are all old Foundry British celts, done by the Perry twins long, long ago... and the molds are wearing a bit thin.
Celts
You might notice that I have mixed Black Tree and Foundry shields - the BTD ones are noticeably thicker.
Celts
And here's the Iron Lady herself.
Celtic chieftain
A closer view at the hair.
Celts
The crackling effect on the shields is from a gloss varnish gone bad. Oh well...
Celts
I used brownish tones in this last batch. Probably should have done so earlier.
Celts
I dropped and lost one shield, therefore the guy on the left has a plastic Grenadier shield. eM-4 used to sell these for next to nothing, especially compared to the ripoff prices most manufacturers ask for loose shields.
Celtic standard
I have far too many command groups for the amount of warriors that I have - in WAB terms, that is. Must chuck a few extra standards in the back row, I guess.
Celts
More celtic warriors.
Celtic warband
Few... the infantry are done.
Celtic warband
A couple of druids lead the 4B: Bare Bottom British Brigade.
Celtic nobles
Foundry celtic nobles.
Celtic druids
Apparently this attire is not historical, but based on some misinterpretation of roman historians.
Celtic fanatics
In their fleshy glory.
Celtic fanatics
When these guys are in Osprey plates, there's always a shield or another guy or errant plantlife or whatever obstructing the view of their privates. It was a really harrowing experience trying to find a reference how to paint period pubic hair.
Celtic fanatics
Another pair of these sensible fellows.
Celtic fanatics
I don't really know if the pose is really historical, but that's how shield goes given that arm position - the handle is horizontal.
Celtic fanatics
One of them even wears a helmet.
Celtic fanatics
For some reason, I had lots of trouble with my new batch of Veni Vidi Vici transfers. They wouldn't stay on, perhaps because I did not put on a coat of gloss varnish before I applied them.
Celtic fanatics
I rushed this batch a bit, and it shows. Also, doing a batch of 28 is too tiring. Should stick to 8-12 at a go.
Celtic fanatics
I rather like the bearded fellow. He was also a single in the random assortment of celts I got.
Celtic fanatics
Yeehaw! Geronimo! Hmmm... what would these guys yell?
Celtic nobles
Foundry nobles. You will note that these guys have somewhat more sensible poses for the shields. Perhaps the Perry twins did more reading into the subject...
Celtic nobles
I was really fed up with celts by the time I got to these guys, I really didn't do them justice.
Celtic nobles
They had to have one with the birdie-helmet...
Celtic nobles
I like the bowler helmets. It makes them sort of more British...
Celtic nobles
Two more for the command group.
Celtic noble
Did you notice it yet? I did part of the nobles in the basic colors of British uniforms from various periods as a lark.
Celtic chariots
Boudicca leading the Black Tree tribe to battle.
Celtic chariots
These would complete my celtic army if hadn't bought a cavalry horde from Foudry...
Celtic chariots
The warrior queen herself. I painted her in the same color scheme as the foot version. Afterwards I noticed that this was supposed to be Boudicca and the foot version is actually Cartimandua. Oh, well...
Celtic chariots
Black Tree chariots in action. I actually ordered two heavy and two light chariots from them, but they sent me four heavy ones instead. The difference is minimal, but the identical crews get a bit boring.
Celtic chariots
Yiihaa!
Celtic chariots
The base is a mixture of static grass and coffee grounds.
Celtic chariots
A better view of the horses. I made a conscious effort to make the horses different and not the usual brown all over deal.
Celtic chariots
More horses. Two of the chariots were missing the yokes, so I made new ones from wire.
Celtic chariots
And the obligatory overhead view. These are based on 80x80mm bases. I was torn between that and Vis Bellica's 60x120mm, but went with this anyway. You could put a few chariot runners on the sides.
Horse
Here's a dipped horse. I spray-painted it brown, added the other colors flat and dipped in Dark Walnut. Reasonable result for the effort, I'd say.
Oh, it's a Foundry Celtish horse.
Celtic cavalry
The first ten celts ride into the sunset. These are 28mm Foundry models by Mark Copplestone that he made for the Caesarean Roman range. Frankly, these are better sculpts than the old Perry range.
Celtic cavalry
I originally intended to put some transfers on the shields, but my VVV transfers wouldn't fit on the new style shields...
Celtic cavalry
The brown horses are all dipped while the riders are painted more conventionally.
Celtic cavalry
I painted the riders separately, which was a good idea except that a few shield positions proved impossible to fir and I had to reglue them.
Celtic cavalry
A relatively limited palette was used to speed painting. The downside is that there are quite a few pretty similar figures.
Celtic cavalry
I guess the chainmail could mark him as the leader.
Celtic cavalry
More celtic cavalry.
Celtic cavalry
I tried to use a piece of wire in the rider's butt to link to the horse, but while it was good for holding the figure while painting, it was just unnecessary hassle glueing it down.
Celtic cavalry
Celtic riders.
Celtic cavalry
Aargh! I still can't do metal in 3-color!
Celtic cavalry
Apart from the metal bits, I'm pretty satisfied with these.
Celtic cavalry
The next batch of celts is ready. I did this one in Foundry/Dallimore 3-color for comparison.
Celtic cavalry
The obligatory overhead view.
Celtic cavalry
Originally I intended to time these to compare with my traditional methods, but then I forgot all about it... They also hit into a general slump of painting activity, so the numbers probably woundn't have been good anyway.
Celtic cavalry
The shield designs are all hand-painted because my VVV decals wouldn't fit on these shields.
Celtic cavalry
I painted the horses and the riders separately. The horses are actually dipped for the most part. This caused some problems in fitting because the celtic saddle limits shield positions.
Celtic cavalry
The limitations of the Foundry basic palette become obvious when painting more figures. You basically have just one green, one red, one blue, one kinda yellow, black and white and the rest are shades of brown. I guess I gotta order some more. A darker blue would be nice for starters.
Celtic cavalry
I think I still feather the flat surfaces too much.
Celtic cavalry
I think the shirts went pretty nicely.
Celtic cavalry
Some of the riders are in slightly odd poses because I couldn't fit them properly into the saddles.
Celtic cavalry
Finally done, woo-hoo!
Celtic cavalry
These fellas were sitting on my desk for a very long time... now I only have the eight freebie warriors that came with these and a bunch of civilians to paint.
Celtic cavalry
I still can't do metal in 3-color. And the Foundry red isn't very good...
Celtic cavalry
Some figures didn't fit in their saddles too well.
Celtic cavalry
Another pair of noble cavalry. I guess I need to redo my army list now.
Celtic cavalry
The limitations of the sample Foundry palette become more and more obvious...
Celtic cavalry
The shields are freehand because my VVV transfers don't fit them.
Celts
The final batch of celtic warriors.
Celts
This set came as a freebie with Foundry's celtic cavalry horde.
Celts
These are done almost entirely in 3-color style with Foundry colors.
Celts
Except the metallics. I still can't do metallics in 3-color.
Celts
I think I'm getting the hang of it.
Celts
The color palette is a bit limited though, maybe I should get some more colors.
Celts
It's the burnout again. Everything went well up to the point I was supposed to do individual shield designs for everyone.
Celtic storage
Here are my celts in storage, minus the cavalry component which is still exiled to the display cabinet in the living room.
More celts to the fray
Here's the latest batch of celts. I still have over 40 of these to do... sigh...
More celts to the fray
Some archers to provide ranged punch.
More celts to the fray
More slingers. Didn't really want these guys, but they came with the box.
More celts to the fray
Warriors, mostly Warlord plastics. The weapons feel real flimsy, we'll have to see how they hold up.
More celts to the fray
Another view of the archers.
More celts to the fray
The Warlord box had way too few shields, so I had to raid the bit box for spares.
More celts to the fray
The leader guy is from Renegade. The sword is a bit on the thick side, but overall I like these figures better than the plastics.
More celts to the fray
The obligatory overhead view.
The Final Celts
Missile support. Archers and slingers from Renegade.
The Final Celts
Two archers.
The Final Celts
I just hate these plastic figures. This guy's sword broke while I was painting him. No problem, I'll just drill out the fist and stick a spear there... except the hand is too small to take 1mm drill bit. Screw scale accuracy, I want figures that can take a bit of handling.
The Final Celts
Celtic warriors.
The Final Celts
There's just so many of them...
The Final Celts
One more hornblower to the mix...
The Final Celts
Celtic warriors assemble. Almost all done now.
The Final Celts
The obligatory overhead view.
The Final Celts
The brave nobles lead their people against Roman oppression! The leader is from Renegade while the boys are from Warlord.
The Final Celts
The obligatory overhead view.
The Final Celts
I have no idea what would have yellow feathers. Maybe they're dyed. I quite like this figure and I'm a bit sad I was just so fed up with anything celtic I didn't really give him proper attention.
The Final Celts
Warlord nobles. I was too lazy to glue their scabbards on, so they'll have to make do with spears.
The Final Celts
More celtic nobles. I was too tired to dig out the transfer sheets so I just painted the shields freehand.
The Final Celts
More freehand shields. The one on the left looks more native american than celtic, byt what the heck...
The Final Celts
More dynamic rushing poses from Warlord. These guys have real trouble staying put.
The Final Celts
I used up most of the Warlord shields on the nobles so most of the regular warriors had to do with ones from the bits box.
The Final Celts
The last batch of regular warriors.
The Final Celts
Ever wondered what a couple hundred celts look like? Well, this is it...
The Final Celts
The obligatory overhead view.
The Final Celts
The boys rush in. These are Warlord Games plastic celts.
The Final Celts
Stick some in. Celtic archers from Renegade support their plastic fellows. I quite like these figures. Too bad I was so tired with celts I didn't really give them a proper treatment.
The Final Celts
The abdominal muscles on this one look a bit funny.
The Final Celts
For some reason none of the Warlord figures had the iconic lime-washed hair.
The Final Celts
This is the PG-rated version. Note no blood...
The Final Celts
I probably should have drybrushed the bare chests after the wash.
The Final Celts
Next time I won't wash the shield designs...
Hail Caesar Celts
The army arrayed for battle, sort of. Except this isn't a legal army. Oh, shucks...
Hail Caesar Celts
This is the cavalry division. Except that cavalry division can't have any infantry skirmishers. Well, that sort of almost makes sense.
Hail Caesar Celts
The first infantry division featuring the warlord's bodyguard and three regular warbands and a couple of skirmishers.
Hail Caesar Celts
The second infantry division featuring fanatics backed up by three regular warbands and a couple of skirmishers.
Hail Caesar Celts
A closer view of the infantry.
Hail Caesar Celts
The battle line goes on and on...
Hail Caesar Celts
Mmmm... horseflesh...
Hail Caesar Celts
The obligatory overhead view. The tiles are 2x2 foot.
Command Base
I got these custom sabot bases from Warbases to be used as command bases in Hail Caesar. Looks pretty nice IMHO.
