Genestealers
A horde of perimäpöllijäs approaching.
Genestealers
They're coming for us! Argh!
Genestealers
Most of these came from the actual Space Hulk box, but three of them are renegades from Space Crusade. Can you tell which is which?
Genestealers
I did these pretty fast, about three full nights for the lot. In retrospect, I should have spent more time cleaning the castings.
Genestealers
Even more claws.
Genestealers
The name is an interesting holdover. There was a genestealer with vaguely the same outline in the original Rogue Trader game, but it was a very different creature. This is what it became when someone decided to cash out on Aliens...
Genestealers
Sideshot.
Genestealers
Some more stealers...
Genestealers
Basically, I took this shot to see how close I can get with my camera.
Genestealers
Oo la la, what legs!
Tyranid Sampler 1
I got a pile of mildly damaged gaunts in a batch of 2nd hand tyranids I bought, so I decided to use them as color scheme samplers. The middle one is a Kryomek Alpha Helion, though.
Tyranid Sampler 1
I'm not too happy with the Kryomek, but the gaunts look ok.
Tyranid Sampler 1
Vanilla termagaunt - or is it horma? Whatever... I'm not entirely sure I want to go with this color scheme, though. Or maybe I should do each brood in a different scheme?
Tyranid Sampler 1
Spinegaunt in the first sampler scheme. This is relatively quick and easy to paint, which is good since you need a lot of gaunts for 40K. Though I'm not sure I'll ever use these for actual 40K games.
Tyranid Sampler 1
Test subjects from top. The carapace could be a bit more colorful...
Tyranid Sampler 1
Gaunts side-by-side.
Genestealers
More of the original genestealers from the Space Hulk box. I originally intended to do these just as quick and dirty as the previous set, but in the end they took maybe ten times as long to finish.
Genestealers
These photos were taken outside. I've found that direct sunlight tends to be too bright and creates too strong shadows, so I took these in the shade. Which was really too dark. Oh well...
Genestealer
Closeup on the back of my second generation genestealer. Due to the hunched pose, this is actually the part you're going to spend most time looking at.
Genestealer
These were primed with green spray, green inkwash directly over that, drybrushed with Rotting Flesh, then detailed in light brown with black/dark grey claws.
Genestealer
Actually, I didn't paint this. I bought this batch of stealers second hand and this one figure was already mostly painted. I just gave it a light inkwash and painted the claws.
Tyranid sampler 2
These are from the Battle for Macragge box set.
Tyranid sampler 2
I like this result better than the last one, I think I'll paint a full brood in this color scheme.
Tyranid sampler 2
Closeup showing how macro lacks depth focus.
Tyranid sampler 2
I undercoated these with gray primer and put a dark gray wash directly over that, a speed up technique I've previously used with genestealers. After the wash is dry, pick out the plates in black and give it a light gray drybrush all over. Then just a little detailing and it's done. Very fast overall and fun to do.
Tyranid sampler 2
The obligatory overhead view again.
Tyranid sampler 2
The dots are actually rather easy to do because they don't have to be uniform.
Tyranid sampler 2
And one from the rear quarter. It's not very evident in these pictures, but the join over the rear legs is the weak point of these figures. Leaves a horrid gap and should really be puttied.
Gaunts
Gaunts from the side.
Genestealers
These are the new-style genestealers that came with the Battle for Macragge box. I was really uninspired to do these, but I made a pledge to paint up everything in the box.
Genestealers
Closeup on one the new stealers. As I'm already swimming in stealers, I really didn't need these guys.
Genestealers
Frankly, I'm not so sure these are any better than the old ones. E.g. the tails are fused to the legs.
Genestealers
Top view showing the carapace.
Gaunts
Here's the other five gaunts from the Battle for Macragge box.
Gaunts
Overhead view of this mini-brood. I have about 16 not so good (assembled by someone else) gaunts I plan to paint in the same scheme.
Tyranids
All the tyranid bits that came in the Battle for Macragge box.
Tyranid infestation
Infestation markers. Not very well done.
Tyranid hive node
Hive node from the Macragge box.
Tyranid spore mines
Frag mine from Macragge box.
Tyranid spore mines
Another type of mine.
Tyranid spore mines
And another type. I can't recall whether this is poison or acid.
Tyranid gaunts
More gaunts. I bought these used, they were already assembled and somewhat lost causes, so I figured I'd use them for test subjects.
Tyranid gaunts
Camera LCD sucks in bright sunlight. Should have taken these pictures indoors anyway.
Tyranid gaunts
The funny thing is that I actually have so many genestealers that I have a hard time fitting in any other troop choices.
Tyranid gaunts
I guess they're ok from three feet away.
Rippers
Naturally, I have to have 11 bases of rippers (max unit size is 10).
Rippers
Darn autofocus... I cut corners on these puppies seriously. Also, I glued them on bases before painting, which is a mistake as far as painting goes.
Rippers
Rippers aerial view.
Rippers
More blurry rippers.
Gaunts
These are the first real gaunts I assembled from scratch (i.e. not counting the Macragge one pose wonders).
Gaunts
Hormagaunts, that's them with the scythe arms.
Gaunts
Spinegaunts and a termagaunt leader.
Hormagaunt
The rock on the base is there to stop him from tipping over. These overly dynamic action poses are slightly annoying in that regard.
Gaunts
More hormies. I mixed the bodies a bit to keep things interesting, but I found out that the leg armor plates on the leaping bodies are much, much smaller than on the trotting bodies.
Hormagaunt
More rocks for balance.
Spinegaunt leader
Yes, I know you can't have hive node mutants anymore, but I made him anyway for a bit of variety.
Termagaunt leader
Another leader beast. He'll make a nice boss for kill team games.
Spinegaunt
I think the spinegaunts look better than the termies actually.
Spinegaunts
More spiney action poses.
Tyranid Warriors
Here's the first batch of tyranid warriors. I was initially planning to do them in more detail than the gaunts, but actually didn't.
Tyranid Warriors
One venom cannon, two with deathspitters and two with devourers.
Tyranid Warriors
The obligatory overhead view.
Tyranid Warriors
Venom cannon looks a bit too large for this model.
Tyranid Warriors
I chose green for the pipes for no particular reason.
Tyranid Warriors
Deathspitter. I didn't realize it until they were assembled, but the deathspitter warriors are in nearly identical poses. The weapons held in two hands don't really have that many posing options.
Tyranid Warriors
Back detail. Initially I intended to add another color for the carapace, but didn't.
Tyranid Warriors
Devourers. In warrior hands, it's actually pretty potent with the new extended range.
Tyranid Warriors
Devourer from side.
Tyranid Warriors
Devourer detail.
Tyranid Warriors
Deathspitter detail.
Tyranid Warriors
Another view of a deathspitter warrior. I chopped the tongues off some of the models because I felt it'd look silly if they were all licking their lips...
Spinegaunt
Apart from being cheap pointswise, I like the look of the spinegaunts better. They are also much more poseable with the separate arms.
Tyranid Warrior
A close combat warrior. The claws are really a bit too big for him.
Tyranid Warrior
Warrior from the side. It's funny how you get a bazillion of gun options on the sprues, but the claw and talon department is actually pretty limited.
Tyranid Warrior
Bad shot, showing the areas no one usually pays attention to.
Tyranid Warrior
Another rending machine.
Tyranid Warriors
The trio of melee monsters.
Tyranid Warriors
This is actually a legal formation.
Tyranids
Here's the latest batch of tyranids. Only 15 plastic ones to, then onto the metal models...
Tyranid
And the overhead view...
Tyranid swarm
My tyranid army is nearing completion, such as it is.
Tyranid swarm
Now I only have to figure out what the heck to do with these guys...
Spinegaunt
Bam bam...
Spinegaunt
These leaping bodies really need something on the base to stabilize them. And the ankles are really more delicate than I'd care for.
Spinegaunt
The occasional non-shooting pose for variety.
Hormagaunt
I tried to use the running bodies for hormies too, but it's rather hard to pose the talons sensibly with them.
Spinegaunt
Another John Woo action pose. Oh man I wish he'd go back to Hong Kong and start making kick-ass films again...
Hormagaunts
These are the last plastic tyranids I had.
Hormagaunts
I just wanted to get these done, and it shows to some extent. I guess I should do something else before I tackle the metal ones.
Hormagaunts
The big meanie is out of focus...
Hormagaunts
These are rather irritating to balance. I glued washers on most of the bases, but they still aren't too stable.
Hormagaunts
Varnishing is a bit too heavy too...
Hormagaunts
Chopety-chop...
Hormagaunts
I used some running bodies for variety, but the claws are darn hard to position with them.
Hormagaunts
Curiously, most of this style jumping body ended up as hormies while the other style is mostly spinegaunts.
Tyranids
A bunch of spore mines and a couple of zoanthropes.
Spore mines
I got these metal spore mines as part of a deal.
Spore mines
Didn't really want them, but what the heck...
Spore mines
I have a feeling I have more of these critters than I'll ever be able to use.
Spore mine
Frag spore mine. Maybe it would have looked better with black body and gray tentacles.
Zoanthrope
I tried gemstone shading on the little jewel thingies on the carapace, but I don't think it really worked out.
Zoanthrope
Side view.
Zoanthrope
Usually they are not looked at from this angle, but there's still a wealth of detail down there.
Zoanthropes
Here's the pair of them.
Hive tyrant
I tried washes with the teeth, but ended up painting the background black and just picking out the teeth in white.
Hive tyrant
The grunt's eye view.
Hive tyrant
I bought this model second hand and it had already been assembled and damaged. This is why the venom cannon is missing the bayonet.
Hive tyrant
Rear view.
Hive tyrant
I think it'd look better in more dynamic poses, but the base is too small and balancing all that metal would be a tad difficult.
Raveners
Three raveners ready to slice and dice. The new codex changed their config quite a bit actually, but I guess I'll manage.
Ravener
Unfortunately, the camera focused on the base again. Anyway, I like this head better than the other one.
Ravener
I really should have done a bit more for the large talons.
Raveners
Here's the three raveners from above.
Ravener
I made the mistake of assembling this guy in a dynamic pose leaning a bit to the side. The end result is that the model is extremely unstable, I had to glue the bullet on the base to balance it.
Hive tyrant
The tyrant head on. It looks more than a bit like the alien queen from you-know-which-movie...
Hive tyrant
And the obligatory overhead view.
Tyranids
The last few tyranids.... a hive tyrant and a carnifex.
Hive Tyrant
Hive tyrant.
Hive Tyrant
I painted the chest plate on this one to make them easier to tell apart.
Hive Tyrant
Side view.
Hive Tyrant
And from the other side. I glued a 40mm washer under the base to provide better balance.
Carnifex
Don't you just love that smile? The mandibles were a bitch to glue on, though...
Carnifex
It looks surprisingly small with the hunched over pose.
Carnifex
Barbed Strangler ready for action.
Carnifex
The gun from the other side. I assembled the entire model before painting, and getting to the chest plate was a bit difficult.
Tyranids
Hive Tyrant and Carnifex show their backs.
Tyranids
Almost all my painted tyranid forces.
Tyranids
Hive Tyrants lead the assault.
Tyranids
The genestealers are not done in the same scheme. They are older and mostly came from Space Hulk sets.
Tyranids
Overhead view of the army.
Tyranids
Tyranid warriors form a solid elite core. This is the assault brood.
Tyranids
More warriors, this time more of a fire support role.
Tyranids
And a horde of rippers.
Tyranids
Hormagaunts.
Tyranids
Termagaunts. I don't really like the look of the fleshborer, but I got a bunch of figures that were already assembled with it.
Tyranids
Spore mines ready to mess with enemy deployment.
Tyranids
Raveners surge forward. These models are darn hard to balance. In the end I glued a 40mm washer under their bases too.
Tyranids
Genestealers, the front ones are from Macragge set.
Tyranids
My personal favorite, spinegaunts. I made those bigheaded leader beasts for variety even though I knew the new rules don't have the hive node mutant option anymore.
Tyranids
More genestealers.
Tyranids
Here's the HQ twins again.
Auntie T
Auntie T taking care of the wee ones.
Auntie T
Auntie's endearing smile.
Auntie T
The wee ones.
Auntie T
They are so young and eager.
Auntie T
More rippers.
Auntie T
What was I thinking? That color scheme doesn't fit at all!
Auntie T
These guys have incredible balance.
Auntie T
The gun keeps Auntie T's apron on nicely.
Auntie T
And you just gotta have a bow.
Auntie T
Her better side.
Auntie T
Sprightly youngsters.
Auntie T
Auntie T.
Auntie T
Yet another publicity shot for Auntie T.
Auntie T
Uncle Carny.
Auntie T
Uncle carny brings the food to the table.
Auntie T
What a smile. Actually, attaching the mandibles was a pain.
Auntie T
He's really a nice guy.
Auntie T
Uncle Carny again.
Auntie T
Uncle's big gun.
Auntie T
Hmmm, no idea what this shot was for.
Auntie T
The classic Uncle Carny pose.
Auntie T
The three brothers.
Auntie T
Another shot of the three brothers.
Auntie T
Oopsie, no steadycam here.
Auntie T
Brother Hormie.
Auntie T
Brother Hormie's good side.
Auntie T
Brother Hormie just loves the camera... or maybe just the photographer.
Auntie T
Brother Termie.
Auntie T
Now isn't that a happy smile?
Auntie T
Brother Spiney.
Auntie T
He just keeps taking that rock everywhere he goes.
Auntie T
Brother Spiney up close.
Auntie T
Brother Spiney again.
Auntie T
Spiney and Termie have a discussion.
Auntie T
Termie and Hormie exchange opinions.
Auntie T
Now it's Spiney and Hormie!
Auntie T
Hormie's chair.
Auntie T
Auntie T getting ready for the shoot.
Auntie T
Termie's chair.
Auntie T
Spiney's chair.
Auntie T
Hormie in the pantry.
Auntie T
TV dinner.
Auntie T
Hello, anyone there?
Auntie T
Frozen dinner.
Auntie T
A good night's sleep awaits.
Auntie T
I'm so tired.
Auntie T
Wait, there's someone here!
Auntie T
He looks nice and tender!
Auntie T
Action shot!
Auntie T
Dinner is served!
Tyranid Winter Assault
Winter stealth commando brood!
Tyranid Winter Assault
The obligatory overhead view.
Tyranid Winter Assault
They're made from spare parts, broken models and some wooden beads.
Tyranid Winter Assault
Does this count as non-GW parts or not?
Tyranid Winter Assault
I just stuck in whatever spare weapons fit.
Tyranid Winter Assault
Maybe this enough for a Kill Team.
