Samurai
I dug up these to see how many I actually had. The nice ones are pre-painted ones from eM-4, the crappy ones I did around '87 when I was still breathing solvent fumes.
Samurai
Most of mine are Dixon miniatures, but one came from a Kinder egg. Yes, I really was that cheap, painting up crap from easter eggs.
Samurai
These are the nice eM-4 ones.
Samurai
I think I redid the monk and the sumo wrestler at a later date, which explains why they don't suck quite as much.
Samurai dwelling
These are Hovels 25mm Samurai line.
Samurai dwelling
I think I need some more/bigger houses. Maybe I'll try building some as soon as I get this stuff painted.
House in the hills
Argh! No! Another useless top view...
House in the hills
I bought a pile of these pieces without really thinking about the layout.
House in the hills
The walls came in two batches. For some reason, the first batch contained walls with the creeping vines while the second batch was all clean -- even though there's only one order code for these walls.
House in the hills
The corner piece length is NOT one half of straight piece, which limits the layout options somewhat.
House in the hills
The house. These are done almost entirely in Winsor & Newton tube acrylics... except the white bits, which are mostly cheap indoor latex and the blue curtain, which is done in Miniature Paints with a dash of Warzone blue ink.
House in the hills
These are all Hovels 25mm scenics.
House in the hills
Doing the plankwork on the house was actually rather irritating...
House in the hills
Another view of the house. I guess I could have defined the blinds better, but I was again getting the stage where I just wanted the damn thing to be finished.
House in the hills
Since I did not paint up my new batch of samurai figures yet, I dug up some old ones for action shots.
House in the hills
The nice ones are pre-painted ones I bought from em-4. The crappy ones are some Dixon minis I originally did almost 20 years ago, redid maybe 12 years ago and got ruined by a batch of bad varnish!
House in the hills
The ishidori have maybe 5 levels of shading... not that you'd notice, they turned out much too dark.
House in the hills
The monk is mine, but I can't remember whether I actually painted it or not. Could have been a friend of mine who actually has artistic talent.
House in the hills
Samurai in colorful armor.
House in the hills
Showdown in the sunset.
House in the hills
The gate... the gate...
House in the hills
More Hovels samurai housing goodness. This is the old house.
House in the hills
Another view of the old house. And I still dislike doing the plankwork...
House in the hills
Yet another view of the old house...
House in the hills
Country inn, I think. I like how the roof came out.
House in the hills
Considering that I prettu much just splurged some color on the sacks, they look ok.
House in the hills
Candlemaker's store, I believe, is what they call this model.
House in the hills
This one was much much faster to paint because it doesn't have that white stuff and planking.
House in the hills
Here are all the Hovels samurai houses on display.
House in the hills
Another view of the samurai houses.
Samurai Cavalry
The one on the left is Grenadier, the one on the right is from Dixon. AD&D Oriental Adventures had just come out and we just had to play it.
Samurai Cavalry
Closeup of the Grenadier samurai.
Samurai Cavalry
Dixon samurai. I think this has been partly repainted at later date.
Samurai Cavalry
At the time, my character in our Kara-Tur campaign was a member of the Tomato clan - thus the banner.
Samurai
The three samurai -- we're on a budget here.
Samurai
See how the water gleams... oh, there are some figures in the picture too.
Samurai
Hybrid style: Flesh is 3-color while the cloth is still traditional wash and drybrush.
Samurai
Here the cloth is 3-color but it's not the official Foundry palette. Contrast is too stark.
Samurai
Again, the cloth is inkwashed while flesh is 3-color.
Samurai
All facing the pond.
Samurai
Painted fully in Foundry 3-color style, with official Foundry colors. I think I am getting better at this (the yellowish tint is just the camera).
Samurai
And his backside.
Samurai
Why is he looking up? Searching for some rooftop ninjas perhaps?
Samurai
Hmmm... flash ruined the pic.
Samurai
Two more samurai. It seems the red background cloth has messed the color balance on my camera... too bad.
Samurai
This model is done entirely in official Foundry colors, but on a white undercoat rather than black. Black does work better with this style.
Samurai
Unfortunately, the spear wouldn't sit well in the hand, resulting in the unsightly glob of epoxy.
Samurai
I think the helmet came out well. Note how the base is not dry yet, you can see the white glue on it.
Samurai
Another samurai. This is not 100% kosher 3-color one, though. The brown cloth is based on a Vallejo color and inkwashed before painting in the highlight. I simply squirted too much Vallejo brown and had to use it somewhere...
Samurai
The black scabbards are getting a bit boring. I guess I gotta look up some reference pictures and start decorating them.
Samurai
Very drab overall. I found the black hair a bit problematic, didn't quite know how to highlight it.
Samurai
And the obligatory overhead view.
Samurai in vest
I struggled to come up with this color combination, but I'm pretty happy with the end result.
Samurai in vest
Red is definitely not one of the better colors in the Foundry palette, but this came out ok.
Clan Wars troopers
I basically painted these to see how fast I could paint them.
Clan Wars troopers
As Clan Wars is fantasy, so are these outfits. They are inspired by the real thing, but not quite it.
Clan Wars swordsman
This quilted armor really should be colorful, I tried painting it but the individual strings were just too much, so I repainted it all black...
Clan Wars swordsman
I gotta find a better way to do shiny swords. This looks pretty crappy.
Clan Wars archer
This armor doesn't have as much quilting, so it was actually easier to paint. I'm particularly happy with the blue on the pants.
Clan Wars archer
Another bit of seashell.
Ronin with spear
Another Dixon samurai tries his luck. This figure comes with separate weapon, I chose yari.
Ronin with spear
The spearshaft is bent... proving that Dixon is still into the old style alloys.
Ronin with spear
Hmmm... the white paper background didn't quite work here.
Ronin with spear
The pants are done in Buff Leather I think and the shirt is Ochre - but you can't really see the difference in the photo. If you zoom in, you'll see how bad the cord on the spearshaft looks. I think a wash would have been better.
Samurai with sword
Note the shape of the blade. A Sakabatou?
Samurai with sword
I'm not happy with the pants, there's too much contrast between the shade and the highlight.
Samurai with sword
The back looks a bit better, IMHO.
Samurai with sword
That's a real seashell on the base. I collected this authentic sand from a beach in Tenerife and a few bits of shell were included.
Samurai in vest
Ok, he's got a sword too.
Samurai with two swords
I'm pretty happy with this one, except the sword blades. I still haven't figured out how to do really shiny blades.
Samurai with two swords
Macro shows its lack of depth focus again.
Samurai with two swords
Again, patterns drawn with a technical pen. The hat is drybrushed and with Miniature Paints to boot.
Samurai with two swords
It's slightly out of focus, but I think I'm getting better with the faces. Especially the gnarly ones like this.
Samurai lady
I'm not entirely happy with the eyes, but otherwise I think it went pretty well.
Samurai lady
I think the pants went especially well.
Samurai lady too
The color combination is wrong. Should have been black pants and yellow shirt, since fair hair is not really an option.
Samurai lady too
Black is surprisingly easy to do in 3-color, IMHO. Not quite satisfied with the hair, though. The patterns are done with a technical drawing pen.
Samurai with fan
Another cheater: The brown robe and the green armor are both inked. Naughty me!
Samurai with fan
But the red vest is okay, I think, as are the chrome-dome highlights.
Samurai with hat
I should have used some other color for the socks. The starter set colors are pretty limited actually. You basically have one red, one green, one blue, black and white and a bunch of kinda brownish tones. Wouldn't be a problem if you mix, but the whole point of the Foundry paints is not needing to mix.
Samurai with hat
The red jacket is looking a bit bland even with the patterns. I wish they made technical pens in white or yellow...
Ronin
I'm fine, honest I am...
Ronin
Sneaky gits.
Ronin
Woo-hoo, my superdudes finally manage to kill a couple of spear-carriers.
Ronin
Ikkoku-ryu is ready to start.
Ronin
Let's go thataway.
Ronin
Hiding behind the bush.
Ronin
Sohei horde advancing.
Ronin
The only way to avoid becoming a pincushion.
Ronin
Ok, follow me.
Ronin
The clash is imminent.
Ronin
Battleline advances.
Ronin
Hmm.... this did not go according to plan.
