Tyranid Sampler 1
I got a pile of mildly damaged gaunts in a batch of 2nd hand tyranids I bought, so I decided to use them as color scheme samplers. The middle one is a Kryomek Alpha Helion, though.
2004-06-21
Tyranid Sampler 1
I'm not too happy with the Kryomek, but the gaunts look ok.
2004-06-21
Kryomek
Here's the Alpha Helion up close.
2004-06-21
Kryomek
And another view of the Alpha Helion. I really need to think up another color scheme for these.

Tyranid Sampler 1
Vanilla termagaunt - or is it horma? Whatever... I'm not entirely sure I want to go with this color scheme, though. Or maybe I should do each brood in a different scheme?
2004-06-21
Tyranid Sampler 1
Spinegaunt in the first sampler scheme. This is relatively quick and easy to paint, which is good since you need a lot of gaunts for 40K. Though I'm not sure I'll ever use these for actual 40K games.

Tyranid Sampler 1
Test subjects from top. The carapace could be a bit more colorful...

Palansi
This is the last batch of my palansi. One of the few forces I've actually finished painting.
2004-06-21
Palansi Tentacles
This guy is better balanced than the other tentacle thing, but I stuck the other half of the bullet on the base anyway.
2004-06-21
Purple Hearts
The first of the reinforcements are here! I dug up the rest of my original plastic marines and actually finished them - after about 15 years.
2004-06-21
Palansi Tentacles
I chose this blue scheme for the tentacles to test fading from dark blue to pale bluish white. Worked reasonably well, IMHO.
2004-06-21
Palansi Tentacles
This time, I didn't forget to paint the ribs.
2004-06-21
Palansi Tentacles
Top view showing the tentacles in all their glory.
2004-06-21
Palansi Missile
I'm not fully satisfied with how this guy turned out.
2004-06-21
Palansi Missile
The orange is too close to the pink of the body, and the light green does not have enough contrast.
2004-06-21
Palansi Missile
I also intended to put a fade effect on the tube itself, but in the end I didn't...
2004-06-21
Palansi Missile
Back shot showing the launcher symbiote (or whatever it's supposed to be). The green pustules are individually highlighted, but the color choice is not a good one.
2004-06-21
Palansi Launcher
As this guy comes in both of the command blisters, I have three of him. They all have different color launcher thingy to make them a bit different.
2004-06-21
Palansi Launcher
Closeup of the launcher thingy. Again, more contrast would have been nice. One of these days I'm going to paint up something with just black and white...
2004-06-21
Palansi Leader
Another of these scythe-wielding leaders. This one I painted bluish, again with an ink wash over white base.
2004-06-21
Purple Hearts
I chose to follow the original (very simple) color scheme instead of cooking up something jazzier.
2004-06-21
Palansi Leader
Leader from behind.
2004-06-21
Palansi Leader Closeup
This time I didn't try the bamboo effect. Instead, I wrote morse code on the haft.
2004-06-21
Palansi Army
Well, if you can call 24 figures an army... maybe I should buy some Aruks after all, I can see the pink'n'blue force in my mind's eye...
2004-06-21
Palansi Army
As I've mentioned previously, I actually completed all the palansi I bought. Given that I bought all remaining stock from a clearance sale, I doubt I'll ever get any more.
2004-06-21
Palansi Army
I'll have to think about scratch-building a vehicle or two for these guys, as West Wind never made any.
2004-06-21
Palansi Army
And the famous overhead view. These models are actually surprisingly unstable, because of their dynamic poses, spindly physique and the lightweight pewter-crap construction some of them were hard to stand on even this lightly crumpled bedsheet.
2004-06-21
Palansi Army
Right wing of the army. You'll note how the blue leader matches the blue tentacle symbiote. This was quite unintentional, I only noticed it after I had painted everyone.
2004-06-21
Palansi Army
Army center, featuring the launcher trio, missile guy and the dreaded Green One.
2004-06-21
Palansi Army
And the left wing, with the orange leader and orange tentacle guy.
2004-06-21
Palansi Army
Top view again, this time in more orderly ranks. Totals 15 troopers, 3 launchers, 2 leaders with scythe, 2 tentacle guys, 1 missile launcher and The Green One.

Purple Hearts
Some scrounging went into these figures - I had piles of bolt pistols, but very few bolters handy. Thus the brother marine on the right actually has a new model bolter.
2004-06-21
Palansi Army
More overhead view madness.
2004-06-21
Palansi Army
Coming straight at you! Hmmm... Should I call it the Pink Brigade?
2004-06-21
Space Station Alpha
This is my array of Kryomek Sci-Fi buildings. They are very good, actually.
2004-06-21
Space Station Alpha
The models were obtained in four distinct phases. For the first and last I paid full price - rest were clearance sales.
2004-06-21
Space Station Alpha
I think I'll have to get a bit more connecting corridors and perhaps a few light flak and squad bunkers. In this picture you see, left-to-right: communication tower, squad bunker, large missile silo and part of command bunker.
2004-06-21
Space Station Alpha
Here's the command bunker with communication tower. A missile tower is behind that one. The good thing about these is that the tower/bunker tops are interchangeable. The bad thing, if I have to name one, is that every bleeding thing is bristling with guns. Ok for a lone gun tower or two, but it gets a bit ridiculous if you try to assemple a larger base.
2004-06-21
Space Station Alpha
I got three of these missile silos from a clearance sale for next to nothing. I buy a lot of stuff from clearance sales...

Sci-Fi tanks
Some of these are already featured in some older photos, but I chose to reshoot them with the digital camera anyway.
2004-06-21
Sci-Fi tanks
The teeny tank is a Warzone item, the medium ones are Kryomek and the big one is scratch-built.
2004-06-21
Purple Hearts
Missile launcher. Note the veteran trooper markings.
2004-06-21
Sci-Fi tanks
Kryomek hovercraft APC. The neat thing about these is that the upper and lower hull are separate (a limitation of the resin casting process). This means you can get a hover, grav, tracked and wheeled versions of the same tank. If you don't glue it down, you could even swap them as I think the hulls are all the same size.
2004-06-21
Sci-Fi tanks
On the downside, they are a bit small. This is ofcourse a double-edged sword: On the plus side they don't take ridiculous amounts of tablespace. On the downside, they do look a bit puny if you have any other vehicles on the table.
2004-06-21
Sci-Fi tanks
This was the first one of the tanks I painted, so it's in a rather dull all-green color scheme. There's a weak attempt at doing brownish camo streaks, but they don't show up well at all.
2004-06-21
Sci-Fi tanks
Yeah, it's very bland.
2004-06-21
Sci-Fi tanks
This one is the first attempt I made at Narn camo. As you can see, it looks nothing like the real thing, but relatively OK nonetheless.
2004-06-21
Sci-Fi tanks
These tanks have a nice rough surface texture that drybrushes really well. The downside is that it's very hard to paint neat lines on it, as you can see in the edges of the camo pattern.
2004-06-21
Sci-Fi tanks
This is a Kryomek alien tank I painted (badly) a long ago. Originally, the antennae were straight, they've been damaged in storage.
2004-06-21
Sci-Fi tanks
This certaily isn't among my best work. In fact, it's downright ugly, and not in a positive sense.
2004-06-21
Sci-Fi tanks
Maybe I should get another one and paint it better... maybe not.
2004-06-21
Sci-Fi tanks
This is a scratch-built model I did inspired by an early Warhammer 40,000 article in White Dwarf.
2004-06-21
Purple Hearts
Missile launcher from the side. I actually like this old style launcher better than the new one.
2004-06-21
Sci-Fi tanks
The base for the tank is a shampoo bottle (the WD original used a deodorant bottle). In addition it uses some bits from the bit box, plastic spoon, slottabases and a TV antenna casing.
2004-06-21
Sci-Fi tanks
There are bits from a few Star Wars toys here (I think it was an Empire Strikes Back bounty hunter ship), various plastic models and ofcourse some GW bits.
2004-06-21
Sci-Fi tanks
The bottom of the shampoo bottle was ugly, so I had to cover that up with something. Enter slottabases and some cotton for the exhaust. Note how illogical the design is - what are the sidemounted engines doing?
2004-06-21
Sci-Fi tanks
The commanders meltagun came from a GW robot model. The cat is from a Grenadier familiars set. The stupid clip is from a Tamiya flakvierling kit and the coax MG is a Dark Future gun.
2004-06-21
Sci-Fi tanks
I honestly can't remember how I did the cupola. It's topped off with a plastic shield and I presume the rest must be filled in with putty.
2004-06-21
Sci-Fi tanks
Perhaps not a tank per se, this is an autonomous robot vehicle from Warzone Cybertronic line.
2004-06-21
Sci-Fi tanks
Rather uninspired work, I must say.
2004-06-21
Sci-Fi tanks
I stuck number three there for no particular reason - I only have one of these models (bought from a clearance sale).
2004-06-21
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle
My daughter Saara is a big fan of TMNT. She made this after finding a 'kääpä' (a fungoid parasite that grows on trees - I've no idea what it's called in English).
2004-06-21
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle
Another view of the turtle. The body and limbs are made from scrap cardboard. I helped Saara hotglue it all together, but otherwise she made it herself.
2004-06-21
Purple Hearts
Missile launcher from above.
2004-06-21
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle
Closeup on the head made from kääpä. the shape actually is pretty similar - I'm amazed Saara noticed that.
2004-06-21
Sci-Fi tanks
Thought the scratch-built tank was cool? Well, practice makes perfect I guess -- this is the prototype for that model.
2004-06-21
Sci-Fi tanks
This one is butt-ugly. I think it's also the first scratch-build I ever did. I didn't have the proper tools and I was still painting with enamels and oh boy does it all show...
2004-06-21
Sci-Fi tanks
But this one was actually made from a deodorant bottle. Here's the reason for it: It's a screw bottle, and the screw dial in the bottom makes a perfect engine exhaust without any additional work. Too bad I screwed the rest of it up...

Brother marines among Official(tm) GW ruins.

Purple Hearts
The silver studs are one of the few details in the color scheme.
2004-06-21
Ruins
Official 40K ruins. These are actually rather nice, they're not hollow like most plastic facade style houses.
