Dwarf vs. Giant
These pictures are really, really old. The date here is just a dummy value, these are realy from the mid-80's. Back when I was just starting painting miniatures, enamels were the only paints readily available, and I thought all weapons needed copious amounts of blood to look good.
1985-01-01
Battle scene in the snow
Snow is convenient, because it hides the bases.
1985-01-01
Dwarf vs. Giant
Another shot. The dwarf is a Denizen multi-part dwarf, the giant hails from Grenadier.

Another shot of the battlescene.

Winged View
The winged thing is an official(tm) Cthulhu monster, but I forget which one.

Duel
Old school Chaos Sorcerer vs. Paladin.
1985-01-01
The scary shield
The dragon is the excellent original Tom Meier Zombie Dragon. Funny thing is, after I did this, none of my friends would give me their photos anymore...
1985-01-01
Light me up
Shooting's starting, light up the dragon.
1985-01-01
Ghostly Skrag
A semi-successful attempt at double exposure. I quite like the figure though. I still think it's one of the better ones I ever made, and it's done with enamels.
1985-01-01
Skrag
Much worse shot of Skrag and a Chaos Dwarf from the Good Old Days(tm).
1985-01-01
Explorers in the swamp
The swamp is milk, rice crispies and blue ink.

As you can see, the ink doesn't stay swirly for too long.

Unicorn and maiden
I made this a very long time ago as a gift to my girlfriend. The skeleton's missing an arm now, but I guess I did something right since I'm married to her now.
2003-03-10
Flintloque
Elves on parade. I must admit I know next to nothing about Napoleonic uniforms, so I painted these based on the pictures on the game box.
2003-03-10
Flintloque
Undead on parade.
2003-03-10
Flintloque
Undead leaders, a vampire and a lich. I'm not really satisfied with these - black is an easy color to do adequately (which is what you see here), but rather hard to do really well.
2003-03-10
Flintloque
Undead line.
2003-03-10
Flintloque
Elves, with leader prominently displayed. Again, in retrospect I should have done him in another color.
2003-03-10
Flintloque
Fre... I mean Elf line. Or I guess ad hoc kampfgruppe would be more appropriate.
2003-03-20
Scarecrows
I like the designs, I hate the brittle metal... with spindly arms like this, it's a small wonder none broke.
2003-03-20
Scarecrows
These are from WestWind's Gothic Horror range.
2003-03-20
Scarecrows
The green shirt didn't turn out too well.
2003-03-20
Scarecrows
Jolly group shot.

Explorer and explored
Hmmm... it's not all gold.
2003-03-20
Explorer and Toxic Spirit
Another shot.
2003-03-20
Toxic Spirit
Old Ral Partha Shadowrun figure. I'm not quite happy how it turned out, it doesn't look toxic enough.
2003-03-20
Water Nymphs
A very old Grenadier set. It's not in any common scale, it's a pure display piece.
2003-03-20
Water Nymphs
Another view of the babes.
2003-03-20
Water Nymphs
A had this for quite a while and then I decided to finish it and give it as a Christmas present for someone. I just couldn't decide who to give it to. Considering the amount of work these take, most people are not very appreciative. So, I asked my wife. She couldn't say either, so I gave it to her.
2003-03-25
Flintloque
These are from the Deadloque set, elves and undead.
2003-10-17
Gunfighter
Macro focus depth is very shallow. The downside of automatics is that sometimes they don't do what you meant, like this one focusing on the revolver.
2003-10-17
Greek archers
Again, mostly old style Foundry with the odd Essex figure thrown in.
2003-10-17
Greek centaurs
These are old Ral Partha. Not very good figures, stiff two-dimensional pose (just one), but it's surprisingly hard to find centaurs that fit a mythical theme (instead of anything-goes fantasy).
2003-10-17
Greek centaur
This one had a miscast shield, so I carved it into something of a crescent shape. I also bent the sword to make the figures just a little bit different.
2003-12-17
Hydra
This is actually a Chronopia figure, Stygian Sisters of Tiamat.
2003-12-17
Hydra
This is actually one of the first figures I painted (almost) entirely in Vallejo colors.
2003-12-17
Hydra
Back shot. Instead of painting a more complex design, I decided to highlight the spots with white.
2003-12-17
Hydra
Another useless top view.
2003-12-17
Hydra
The teeth are done in buff. I decided against the official 'lipstick' color scheme.
2003-12-17
Hydra
For some reason, I didn't like Vallejo for drybrushing. Too liquid, I guess, it easily turns into wetbrushing. For drybrushing I used the Miniature Paints paints that I normally use for everything.
2003-12-17
Hydra
I needed something to break the monotone of the blue, so I added the white stripe.
2004-01-23
Undead
Undead army-in-a-box. Well, part of the army anyway. One chariot and skeleton dino are too high for this box.
2004-01-24
Archers
These are archers from the old Grenadier Fantasy Warriors line sculpted by Mark Copplestone.
2004-01-24
Archers
I have no idea about heraldry, I made this up.
2004-01-24
Archers
Actually, I think these are too early style for this slit sleeve thing, but I wanted to try it anyway.
2004-01-24
Archers
I wasn't really inspired to do these at all...
2004-01-24

Archers
I wonder why I always take these useless topview shots? Well, disk is cheap...

Feudals
Pseudo-feudal infantry in a box. My army is a bit cavalry heavy.
2004-01-24
Feudals
Glorious knights ready for a charge at the enemy.
2004-01-24
Evil dudes
The evil army-in-a-box, consisting of chaos warriors, religious fanatics, dark elves and the few remaining undead that did not fit in the other box.

Medusa
This is a Reaper model. This shot came out rather fine, actually.
2004-04-12
Medusa
Ok, this wasn't so good. Apparently the autofocus had a really hard time with the snakelike body.
2004-04-12
Medusa
The gap between upper and lower body is too noticeable. I guess I should learn to use green stuff...
2004-04-12
Skeletons
I've had these skeleton archers in my B-pile for a long time. As part of a desk clearance project I dug them up.
2004-04-12
Skeletons
I think these are Alternative Armies models, but I could be mistaken. It was fun painting skeletons for a change. Maybe I should do my 100 Discount Hobby skellies next...
2004-04-12
Skeletons
These are just basic undercoat - heavy drybrush - wash. Naked skeletons are great for beginners because it's really easy to get them looking good, and they have a lots of good surface area to practice shading and highlighting basics on.
2004-04-12
Skeletons
I just wanted these out of the way, so I gave them all very basic, drab earthtone clothes. I guess most clothes would look that way after a few years six feet under anyway...
2004-04-12
Skeletons
This one actually remembered to bring his arrows.
2004-04-12
Medusa
More medusa shots, this time in my studio. For some reason, this is the only shot where her face is in focus.
2004-04-12
Medusa
I tried to get fancy with the pelt, but it's not too good.
2004-04-12
Medusa
On the other hand, the yellow stripes came out ok.
2004-04-12
Medusa
For some reason, the camera just kept focusing on the pattern on her back.
2004-04-12
Medusa
I tried the Foundry 3-step shading on the rattle, but I guess I didn't get the colors right - the two lightest tones don't have enough contrast.
2004-04-12
Medusa
The base is made from hardboard. I was trying out my new circle cutting drill thingie (close relation to round killing thing).
2004-04-12
Medusa
For once the overhead view is useful. This is NOT the way I intended the pattern to come out... but I managed to salvage it.
2004-04-12
Medusa
I tried to take a few photos outside, something I haven't done in years. Unfortunately, the sun was already really low and it was virtually impossible to see anything in the viewfinder. Alas, most of these are out of focus.
2004-04-20
Armadillo
I thought about giving it a neat pattern on the back, but the saddle obscures most of the back.
2004-04-20
Armadillo
The sword was nearly broken, so I strengthened it with a dab of epoxy. Thus the new hilt design.
2004-04-20
Armadillo
I got this half off from a clearance.
2004-04-20
Armadillo
And the obligatory overhead view...
2004-04-20
Armadillo
Rear view. This is an old one from TTM, if I recall correctly.
2004-04-20
Zulu War
General chaos.
2004-05-19
Bloodbowl
This isn't 40K, this is BloodBowl. For some strange reason, I bought one blister of mixed BB players. This is the only one I actually painted.
2004-06-02
Blue Dragon
This was one of the first figures I bought, ever. This is the second paintjob he has - you don't want to see what he used to look like...
2004-06-02
Blue Dragon
And the wings. There was some cracking in the wing joints I had to strengthen with glue.
2004-06-02
Rögon the Balrog Dragon
This a Ral Partha figure. Rather nice, even though it really belongs on a larger base.
2004-06-02
Rögon the Balrog Dragon
I could have used a more varied color scheme. The mane is done in orange, but the effect is too subtle to really notice...
2004-06-02
Rögon the Balrog Dragon
From above, demonstrating the dynamic snake-like pose.
2004-06-02
Rögon the Balrog Dragon
And the back. The weapons are a bit dull being just black and all that.
2004-06-02
Undead Giant
This is an old Grenadier model. Much better than the new GW Tomb Giant, if I may say so.
2004-06-02
Undead Giant
The staff could use more color, though.
2004-06-02
Undead Giant
Back view. Very simple to paint, really. White base, brown wash for the bandages and rotting flesh for the exposed bits.
2004-06-02
Undead Dino
Back when Jurassic Park came out dino-toys were all the rage. I bought one of those 'then and now' sets, with a live dino and a skeleton. This is made from the skeleton, I never used the live one.
2004-06-02
Black Dragon
This is an old Grendel figure. It's very dusty, as you can see.
2004-06-02
Undead Dino
The howdah uses a film roll tube as basis and the bones are made from sprue. I melted the ends with a candle.
2004-06-02
Undead Dino
The rider is a bog standard Citadel plastic skeleton.
2004-06-02
Undead Dino
I think she's Ral Partha, but I'm not quite sure.

Undead Dino Sorceress
And here's a better look at the gal.
2004-06-02
Undead Dino Sorceress
Sorceress from the back.
2004-06-02
Lord of Change
This is the classic Lord of Change model from GW. I bought and painted it when it was new.
2004-06-02
Lord of Change
I did this for a fantasy project that never got this far... the story of my life.
2004-06-02
Lord of Change
Wings from the back. Though it's not perfect, I'm actually rather satisfied with this.
2004-06-02
Lord of Change
Closeup on the face. I could have used a contrasting brim on the loincloth.
2004-06-02
Robot
Specialised siege robot from early days of 40K. It's missing the weapon on the back, because I converted this as a part of a fantasy battle project... that never got anywhere, as you might have guessed.
2004-06-02
Black Dragon
It's actually a rather nice figure, all-resin, that would really deserve a brighter color scheme.
2004-06-02
Robot
Closeup on the head area. The black color scheme is a bit boring...
2004-06-02
Robot
And here's the back. The shield covers the back weapon installation point.
2004-06-02
Robot
Another view of the robot.
2004-06-02
Black Dragon
Closeup on the head.
2004-06-02
Black Dragon
Sideview. The wings are a bit thick, though.
2004-06-02
Black Dragon
And a closer view from behind.
2004-06-02
Purple Worm
This is an old Grenadier figure, I think. It sat on my desk for a very long time when I had a sort of painting hiatus going. Then I just finished it.
2004-06-02
Purple Worm
Pretty simple really. Purple base, wash and highlight. A bit of detail work and that's it.
2004-06-02
Purple Worm
I like the emerging-from-ground base. It doesn't look big enough to swallow adventurers whole, though.
2004-06-02
Blue Dragon
This is an old Tom Meier figure he did for Citadel in mid-80's or so. I think it was actually called Oriental Dragon.
2004-06-11
Demon
This is a Chronopia figure from their Devout line. I believe it's called The Irritated. Or something.
2004-06-11
Demon
Unfortunately, I had this weird grainy primer, which pretty much ruined the entire figure. Sometimes it works just fine, but in this case it really didn't.
2004-06-11
Demon
The figure was extremely difficult to highlight due to the grainy primer surface. If I had paid full price for this, I should have just stripped the primer and started again. But I got it from a clearance sale for a pittance, and I still have two or three left...
2004-06-11
Demon
Back view. The original color scheme on the box art was greenish, but I chose the classic red demon look instead, to better fit with an upcoming project.
2004-06-11
Demon
The flail was a real bitch assemple. The skull and chains are a separate casting. The contact area with the staff is just too small. I tried superglue, I tried epoxy, the damn thing fell off three or four times during painting. In the end I just gave up and glued it to the base.
2004-06-11
Demon
Closeup on the face. This really shows how bad it is.
2004-06-11
Demon
Closeup on the cursed seam. Grin all you like, you're glued to the turf now!
2004-07-09
War Turtle
This is based on a vinyl toy.
2004-07-09
War Turtle
The howdah is scratch-built using matchsticks, plastic shields and the front piece is from a Grenadier war machine set.
2004-07-09
War Turtle
The turtle itself is repainted. Several times in fact, since my varnish made the ink wash run.
2004-07-09
War Turtle
The howdah has some sort of plastic inner shell, but I've forgotten how I made it.
2004-07-09
War Turtle
These are the first generation of plastic shields GW did with raised detail.
2004-07-09
War Turtle
The crew is from the same set as the front piece.
2004-07-09
War Turtle
It would look better if the shields were more colorful, but this was done in my naturalistic period.
2004-08-22
Skeleton Chariot
I rather like these old style bone wagons.
2004-08-22
Skeleton chariot
The other chariot.
2004-08-22
Skeleton Cavalry
The breastplate armor is a neat production simplification: You can glue it on normal skeleton bodies if you like.
2004-08-22
Skeleton Cavalry
And for a change, realistic length lances. Unfortunately rather brittle too.
2004-08-22
Undead Army
Part of my undead army.
2004-08-22
Undead Army
Showing cavalry, mummies and archers.
2004-08-22
Undead Army
Infantry on display.
2004-08-22
Undead Cavalry
This is from a Ral Partha boxed set called Lord Soth's Charge, of Dragonlance fame. The figures are based on a Keith Parkinson painting, and they're very nice if rather brittle.
2004-08-22
Undead Cavalry
That's old Soth himself.
2004-08-22
Undead Cavalry
The figures are a bit irritating: one of the poses makes it impossible to place a figure on its right side as the spear is sticking way out.
2004-08-22
Zombie Dragon
Detail on the tail.
2004-08-22
Undead Cavalry
More Soth and his boys.
2004-08-22
Vampires
The obligatory Sucker Section. I think these are RAFM miniatures. While they are rather small, they're really nice.
2004-08-22
Vampires
The lady is positively petite.
2004-08-22
Vampires
I really like this pose, it evokes a classic Nosferatu feeling.
2004-08-22
Mummies
The guys in the rear ranks are from HeroWuest, while the front rank is Ral Partha or RAFM, I forget which. In any case, laughably puny compared to their fellows. Oh, and catch a glimpse of the dreaded Disco King...
2004-08-22
Ethereals
Ghostly figures from way back. No idea who made these.
2004-08-22
Doomed Legion
Or Legion of Doom or whatever. In any case, this a collection of figures done by Denizen in the 80's.
2004-08-22
Skeleton Archers
A mix of different manufacturers, Citadel plastics, Denizen, Ral Partha.
2004-08-22
Skeletons
Classic sword'n'shield skellies. Mostly plastic Citadel.
2004-08-22
Skeletons
Looks like one metal figure has been included.
2004-08-22
Zombie Dragon
The windpipe and ribs are nice touches. Tom's a genius, to this date GW has not been able to put out a better zombie dragon.
2004-08-22
Skeleton Spearmen
The spears aren't very numerous... I guess I'll need more.
2004-08-22
Undead Command
Various undead hero types. Mostly Citadel metals though the standard bearer is one of the few Reaper minis I have.
2004-08-22
Lord Helmet of the Undead
And here's Lord Helmet, scourge of the living and dread to all.
2004-08-22
Undead Doggies
Actually, these are Hounds of Tindalos from Grenadier or RAFM (forget which), but they make rather nice undead doggies, don't you think? Now, if I could only remember how I painted these...
2004-08-22
Undead Doggie
Closeup on a Hound of Tindalos.
2004-08-22
Skeletons
Even though I have my doubts about its usability on a battlefield, the scythe is a classic skeleton weapon.
2004-08-22
Skeletons
These are from HeroQuest.
2004-08-22
Iron Dragon
This is from Grenadier's Dragon of the Month series. I got quite a few of those, but I think this turned out best so far.
2004-08-22
Cannon
This is from BattleMasters.
2004-08-22
Gorgons
I bought these to make a custom chariot, but the chariot bit never got made...
2004-08-22
Iron Dragon
Again, it's actually just a pretty basic drybrushing job, but for this subject it works.
2004-08-22
Gorgon
Not very exciting, just black and drybrush.
2004-08-22
Complete Adventurer
This is an old Citadel Limited Edition figure.
2004-08-22
Complete Adventurer
Sort of a joke about RPG characters who carry insane amounts of equipment, this guy has everything AND a kitchen sink! Should have painted it more colorfully, though.
2004-08-22
Undead
A lone skeleton lost from his fellows.
2004-08-22
Pet Dragon
This is a cute Grenadier model. It was originally painted in enamels and later partly repainted (the drybrush). Should have gone all the way.
2004-08-22
Pet Dragon
The mono-color collar and spine don't look good compared to the rest of the model.
2004-08-22
Nightgaunts
I'm not sure whether these are Grenadier or RAFM. IIRC, Grenadier held the Call of Cthulhu license for a while before RAFM acquired it. Then Grenadier basically just relabeled their figures and sold them as generic horror stuff.
2004-08-22
Nightgaunt
It's difficult to see, but the figure is not actually black, but very very dark blue.
2004-08-22
Hunting Horror
Or at least I think it's a Hunting Horror... Grenadier and among the first miniatures I got. It's been repainted, you can see the original paintjob in the 'Trouble in the Snow' pictorial.
2004-08-22
Hunting Horror
With such a huge bulging eye, I should have given it a slit pupil or something.
2004-08-22
Moomin Assault Squad
These are actually made from vinyl keychain figures.
2004-08-22
Moomin Assault Squad
Actually, I'm not too happy with the repaint. The moomins are so round and smooth that the wash wouldn't stay in the crevices.
2004-08-22
Pan Tangian tiger handler
These are old Citadel figures they did to support the launch of the GW edition of Stormbringer. I curse myself for not buying more of these... well, the current elves are still somewhat in the style of the Melniboneans, but you just get anything like these Pan Tangians anymore. Actual Babylonians are close, but not quite the same thing.
2004-08-22
Pan Tangian tiger handler
Closeup of the handler.
2004-08-22
Pan Tangian tigers
Ofcourse, they look nothing like real tigers. It's so easy to fall into the trap of general stereotypes like 'horses are brown, period' and paint animals in way more monotone colors than they really are - the end result resembles those cheap plastic farmyard and jungle sets more than real animals.
2004-08-22
Werebear
Old Grenadier 25mm.
2004-08-22
Werebear
You can clearly see how it's been ruined by bad varnish. Now that I look at this, I can't help but wonder how on earth I let this go on for so long before ditching the offending varnish? I always thought I did something wrong and the varnish was really ok. Yeah, right...
2004-08-22
Big Guys
A collection of ogre-ish figures from a variety of manufacturers.
2004-08-22
Skragg the Slaughterer
This was originally a Citadel Limited Edition figure, but I think it was later relaunched as part of their ogre lineup.
2004-08-22
Skragg the Slaughterer
This is done entirely in enamels, very very long ago. I still think it's among my best work, ever. Sad, huh?
2004-08-22
Skragg the Slaughterer
Back view. You might not see it, but the base is actually rather bent. At the time I was using Bostik contact glue for fixing metal miniatures to bases. Bostik has a high content of solvents (it's a classic favorite of glue-sniffers) and those solvents work havoc on the plastic bases. And it's not even very good glue! Oh why, oh why I didn't just buy 2-component epoxy glues?
2004-08-22
Giant Orc
A Grenadier model, if I'm not mistaken. You'll note that by this time I had shedded the 'orcs are vegetables' brainwashing by GW.
2004-08-22
Giant Orc
You'll note that this is in the classic 'pig face' style of orcs. Too bad you can't get them anymore. I really like the musculature on this model and I think it ranks among my best work from the early acrylic period.
2004-08-22
Ogre
This is a very old Citadel ogre from a set called 'Chaos Marauders'. I think I still have the booklet with the official stats - from the time Warhammer had letter codes for toughness. These miniatures were already very old by the time I got them, and this one sat rather long in the painting queue. The mace head had snapped off so that had to be fixed.
2004-08-22
Ogre
You'll note that this is another model ruined by the bad varnish.
2004-08-22
Big Ogre
This is the plastic ogre from the Milton Bradley game BattleMasters. I stuck on a Citadel plastic shield but otherwise it's vanilla. If I recall correctly, Citadel also made a very similar model in metal.
2004-08-22
BloodBowl Ogres
I didn't play BloodBowl, I just got these because they looked cool.
2004-08-22
BloodBowl Ogre
Small compared to some other ogres, but still towering over puny humans.
2004-08-22
BloodBowl Ogre
This one was miscast. I fashioned the ball and chain from the remains of the miscast hand, a bit of chain and some epoxy filler, which is okay for filling in seams and such, but does not really have sculpting qualities.
2004-08-22
Thrud
The original Thrud the Barbarian Limited Edition from Citadel. I really wish I had painted him better.
2004-08-22
Wolf
This is an original Citadel LotR goblin woflrider wolf. The poor goblin lost his leg in my inexperienced hands...
2004-08-22
Assorted Adventurers
A bunch of old figures, Grenadier, Citadel and some I can't place.
2004-08-22
Adventurers
The guy on the left is a Citadel fighter, repainted. The one on the right came from a Kinder egg.
2004-08-22
Clerics
Citadel and I don't know what. Both have been repainted at later date.
2004-08-22
Wizards
Both are Citadel, but the one on the right is an original LotR Gandalf. Rather good, especially considering it's done in enamels. Way better than most of my work from that period.
2004-08-22
Elves
Two Citadel elves, one being of the dark variety.
2004-08-22
Fighters
The one on the left is old Citadel (note the added rapier in the left hand - I think this was made specifically to model a PC). The knight is old Grenadier.
2004-08-22
Evil Cleric
I think this came with the original BattleSystem box.
2004-08-22
Rohan Warrior
More of the old Citadel LotR figures. Ugly, isn't it? I wonder if he's tournament legal? After all, it IS an official Citadel LotR figure.
2004-08-22
Half-orcs
Citadel half-orcs. The one on the right was modeled after a specific PC, named Denethor III.
2004-08-22
Extra crew
The Grenadier war engine crew kit I used for the war turtle conversion came with four crew, but only three would fit in the howdah. Thus this guy was left over. He's vaguely asiatic, but impossible to place exactly.
2004-08-22
Chaos Sorcerer
The original Citadel chaos sorcerers came with these neat little familiars.
2004-08-22
Chaos Sorcerer
And this is the other chaos sorcerer I got. Note the treebark base. I personally think this is among the best man-size work I did with enamels during my 'double drybrush' period.
2004-08-22
Chaos Sorcerer
Closeup shows the double drybrush effects.
2004-08-22
Paladins
Old Citadel paladins. These guys demonstrate the 'ink-on-bare-metal' style.
2004-08-22
Paladin
Old Citadel paladin. Enamels and ink on bare metal.
2004-08-22
Paladin
Old Citadel paladin. Enamels and ink on metal. If you look closely, you will note that his pants are silver too - I guess I missed that detail when I painted him.
2004-08-22
Fighters
An old Citadel paladin (painted in variant skin tone as an experiment) and a dark elf warrior.
2004-08-22
Fighters
A very old elf chick, repainted at least once, from an unknown manufacturer and a Citadel half-orc.
2004-08-22
Adventurers
A converted (the beard) Citadel elf and I think the mage is Grenadier.
2004-08-22
Fighters
More oldies from the Citadel Chaos Marauders box.
2004-08-22
Adventurers
The mummy is from HeroQuest while the wizard is from the old Citadel Chaos Marauders box set.
2004-08-22
Halfling
Old Citadel. I did not paint this one.
2004-08-22
Chaos Army
Chaos warriors through the ages assemble for battle...
2004-08-22
Chaos Warriors
Both are old Citadel. The one on the left was actually sold as 'evil fighter' while the one on the ledt is from the Chaos Marauders box set.
2004-08-22
Chaos Wizard
From HeroQuest. One of the better miniatures in that set, actually.
2004-08-22
Kaleb Daark
Ah yes, the venerable Kaleb with the DreadAxe. Remember him? I even got the eyes almost right... Why didn't I buy Jaek and Helwud while I was at it? Oh, bugger!
2004-08-22
Kaleb Daark
Where is Malal these days anyway? Haven't heard anything from him in ages... Unfortunately, this great miniature was also ruined by bad varnish. Aaaaargh!
2004-08-22
Chaos Warriors
These came with HeroQuest. Note the dynamic single pose.
2004-08-22
Chaos Warriors
These guys are from the BattleMasters game.
2004-08-22
Chaos Warriors
The BattleMasters warriors up close. These are actually rather good models. The cape does a lot in hiding the imperfections of single pose plastics.
2004-08-22
Chaos Warriors
Original Citadel Chaos Warriors from way back.
2004-08-22
Chaos Warriors
More original Citadel Chaos Warriors. These were among the first models I painted with acrylics.
2004-08-22
Chaos Warriors
As you can see, this was in my 'stupid slogans in ink' period.
2004-08-22
Chaos Warriors
Back then every figure Citadel put out was individually named. One of these guys is called Papworth Organgrinder, I just fail to remember which one.
2004-08-22
Chaos Warrior
This figure demonstrates the 'blades in bare metal' technique.
2004-08-22
Red Redemptionists
These are one of the old Citadel Regiments of Renown, though I actually bought the late-80's reissue.
2004-08-22
Red Redemptionists
These were the last figures to be ruined by the bad varnish. After spending quite some time with these, I just completely swore off brush on varnish.
2004-08-22
Red Redemptionists
Champion and musician. The old Regiments of Renown followed the same basic pattern: commander, standard bearer, champion, musician and a number of identical trooper models.
2004-08-22
Red Redemptionists
Basic troopers.
2004-08-22
Red Redemptionists
The leader. Note the detail on the book cover. It's supposed to be some sort of chaos tome of whatever.
2004-08-22
Red Redemptionists
Standard bearer. This is my first attempt at blending.
2004-08-22
Demons
I think these are Grenadier.
2004-08-22
Demons
They're pretty boring, really. I wonder what the heck I was thinking at the time...
2004-08-22
Chaos Dwarfs
Original Citadel Chaos Drwarf, before the silly hats / Babylonia motif.
2004-08-22
Chaos Dwarfs
Originally, these came in a boxed set of, I believe, seven dwarfs. One of them was never painted.
2004-08-22
Zombie Dragon
This is a Tom Meier classic from 80's.
2004-08-22
Chaos Dwarfs
More chaos. These are among the last figures I did with enamels.
2004-08-22
Chaos Dwarf
I particularly liked this guy, for whatever reason.
2004-08-22
Chaos Dwarfs
More chaotic stunties from the 80's.
2004-08-22
Chaos Dwarf Shield
He's obtained the Demonic Shield: Hideous Visage (cause Terror 12" radius) Chaos Gift.
2004-08-22
Dark Elves
My small Dark Elf 'army'.
2004-08-22
Dark Elves
Crossbow elves from Grenadier, scuplted by Mark Copplestone.
2004-08-22
Dark Elves
Closeup on the crossbows.
2004-08-22
Dark Elves artillery
Original Citadel Dark Elf Repeating Crossbow from way back. I have to admit that the new model looks better, though.
2004-08-22
Undead Chariots
These are the old Citadel plastic skeleton chariots.
2004-08-22
Undead Cavalry
Old Citadel plastic undead cavalry. Remember when you got eight of them in a box?
2004-08-22
Zombie Dragon
I really like this figure, and I think it's among the best work I've done with enamels. This is largely done with successive levels of drybrushing.
2005-09-01
Njetponimaj City II
The cowboys advance.
2005-11-14
Hippogriff
This is the old Marauder/Citadel hippogriff I got for the project. Gotta love TMP community - there's always someone to help you out even with the strangest of requests.
2005-11-14
Harry's hippogriff
This book cover was to be the model for the hippogriff. It's called Hiinokka in the Finnish translation, I have no idea what the original name is.
2005-12-02
Hippogriff
Assembled but the joints are not puttied yet. Very delightful to put together, old skool lead/tin compound, minimal mold lines, very clean casting.
2005-12-02
Hippogriff
Side view of the assembled hippogriff.
2005-12-02
Hippogriff
The joints are hidden with greenstuff.
2005-12-02
Hippogriff
I'll try to make this old jar into the base.
2005-12-21
Hippogriff
As this will be a flying model, the tabs are filed off.
2005-12-21
Hippogriff
Making the base. I grabbed an old jar of something, spray painted it purple and bent a length of 2mm wire to take the hippogriff.
2005-12-21
Hippogriff
Starting work on the wings.
2005-12-21
Hippogriff
Then I prepared a batch of Primodur 100 and poured it in. This would serve the double purpose of locking the wire in place and adding weight to the base. Primodur is pretty dense stuff, so the base weighs a lot more than the model, which is good for stability.
2005-12-21
Hippogriff
The finished hippogriff.
2005-12-21
Hippogriff
The obligatory overhead view. I really did intend to paint it like a real eagle, but I couldn't find a good reference picture I really liked so this is really something I just cooked up.
2005-12-21
Hippogriff
Incidentally, I did this model almost entirely in Vallejo colors, something I usually don't do.
2005-12-21
Hippogriff
Wait a minute! What's this? A hippogriff is supposed to be an eagle/horse hybrid, what the heck is it doing with paws??? The front legs are supposed to be bird claws! Trish and Aly Morrison, you need to retake your Mythical Animals 101!!!!!
2005-12-21
Hippogriff
Ok, so the pose is not really that great for flying...
2005-12-21
Hippogriff
Rear quarter view.
2005-12-21
Hippogriff
I'm not really happy with the head. The highlights are not deep enough.
2005-12-21
Hippogriff
The seams are nicely invisible.
2005-12-21
Hippogriff
Wingspan from above.
2006-02-20
BloodBowl
And here's the completed field. As an experiment, I coated it with acrylic floor polish instead of varnishing it normally. Let's see how it holds out.
2006-02-20
Dungeon Pieces
Last time around I realized I have too few of these short corrider sections, so I made some more...
2006-08-25
Skeletons
These are the ten cent skeletons I bought a year or two back. This is also an experiment in dipping.
2006-08-25
Skeletons
I tried two different dip colors.
2006-08-25
Skeleton
This is the initial test subject for the darker dip. For some reason it was much thicker than the other color, I had to wipe most of it off with a brush.
2006-08-25
Skeleton
Mahogany-dipped skeleton. The eye sockets don't fill quite well, I guess I'll need to add a touch-up phase after all.
2006-08-25
Skeleton
Dark Walnut -dipped skeleton. I diluted the color with water (it's water-soluble varnish, not polyurethane), seemed to work much better.
2006-08-25
Skeletons back to back
Here's a back-to-back comparison of the different dips.
2006-10-15
More skeletons
Another batch of 10 cent skeletons joins the fray.
2006-10-15
Skeletons
In this latest batch, I reduced the color palette even further. It's only five different colors plus dip.
2006-10-15
More skeletons
Though I was shorted! This bag of 50 skeletons only contained 49!
2006-10-25
Moria goblins
I had these painted. I didn't pay much, which is just about the only positive thing I can say about the whole affair.
2006-10-25
Moria goblins
The painting is actually ok, but the seams were not cleaned. My real beef was with the process, though. A little bit more professionalism in the dealings would have secured steady business from me.
2006-10-25
Moria goblins
At least he listened to my request not to have bright green skin.
2006-10-25
Moria goblin archer
I did the basing myself.
2006-10-25
Dipped goblin
This is the freebie goblin that came with White Dwarf. I dipped it as an experiment to see how fast I could mass produce these little buggers.
2006-10-25
Dipped goblin
The cloak is actually pretty ok.
2006-10-25
Dipped goblin
I don't like the green skin thing. Yes, it could be a whole lot better. But not much faster. Estimate 10 minutes for the whole deal. I'll try a batch of 20 next and time the process.
2007-06-04
Skeletons
Lots of them, 51 to be precise. It turns out I wasn't shorted on the 10-cent skeletons after all, I had one bag with 49 and one with 51. And it could be just that I put one back in the wrong bag.
2007-06-04
Skeletons
These are all dipped. This was an experiment in ultimate mass production.
2007-06-04
Skeletons
The obligatory overhead view. As it turns out, there is a limit to how fast you can turn out figure no matter how simple they are. I didn't manage to actually measure it, but I think it's somewhere around the 10-minute mark for me.
2007-06-04
Skeletons
Close up. Learning from previous attempts, I painted the eye sockets black.
2007-06-04
Skeletons
Horde of skeletons approaching.
2007-06-04
Skeletons
I managed to break off one of the axe heads.
2008-08-16
Zombies
It's zombie time...
2008-08-16
Zombies
The two on the left are really old, possibly 80's Citadel. The other one is Alternative Armies celtic-themed undead.
2008-08-16
Zombies
Zombies on the prowl.
2008-08-16
Zombies
These are from Alternative Armies.
2008-08-16
Zombies
Alternative Armies, command group. These zombies have a definitive celtic theme, even though I don't recall them being sold as such.
2008-08-16
Zombies
I think these are some rather old Citadel zombies.
2008-08-16
Zombies
More old Citadel zombies. As I painted these figures after a year-long hiatus, I just dipped these. I figured that would be and ideal process for zombies, who are supposed to look scruffy and weird anyway.
2008-08-16
Zombies
More old Citadel zombies. I don't actually remember where I got these from.
2008-08-16
Zombies
Zombies, this time recent GW plastics.
2008-08-16
Zombies
The obligatory overhead shot.
2008-08-16
Zombies
I tried to assemble these as non-period specific as I could.
2008-08-16
Zombies
Again, these were just dipped. I've seen better dipjobs, but I find these okay for bulk zombies.
2008-08-16
Zombies
I wonder were they got those bone clubs from?
2008-08-16
Zombies
I tried a couple of different skintones for these.
2008-08-16
Zombies
Some of the poses are a bit awkward.
2008-08-16
Zombies
One of the stupid things with these is that none of the arms have full sleeves.
2008-08-16
Zombies
Well, I guess this one doesn't really fit in modern zombie games...
2009-10-03
Orcs
These are the 10 cent orcs.
2009-10-03
Orcs
Closeup. I just dipped these.
2010-08-19
Mage and bouncer
My Nikon's battery was empty so I had to use my Canon, which I don't really like. You can see why.
2010-08-19
Mage and bouncer
Overhead shot.
2010-08-19
Henchman
Some very old figure, newly but badly painted. Notice how slim he is compared to current figs.
2010-08-19
Henchman
And the back ain't much better.
2010-08-19
Water elemental
Not really happy with the results.
2010-08-19
Water elemental
I did this halfway, had a break and when I got back to it I couldn't figure out how I wanted to finish it...
2010-08-19
Water elemental
The base could be a whole lot better. It's a very old Grenadier fig.
2010-08-19
Earth elemental
Another old Grenadier fig. I like this one a lot more.
2010-08-19
Earth elemental
The base is coffee grounds.
2010-08-19
Earth elemental
Backshot.
2010-08-19
Niilo's pet rat
Well, Niilo's character's pet rat, actually. Called Matti Rotta.
2010-08-19
Niilo's pet rat
It's from a HeroQuest set.
2010-08-19
Minotaur
This is an old Kev White fig from Harlequin. I think. The axe haft broke so I replaced it with a pin.
2010-08-19
Minotaur
The pose is a bit flat, but I rather like this one.
2010-08-19
Minotaur
Nice muscle tone.
2010-08-19
Minotaur
And yes, the overhead shot.
2010-08-19
Brains
These are Fortress figures plastics. I broke one, that's why there's only 14 of them.
2010-08-19
Brains
The obligatory overhead shot.
2010-08-19
Brains
Some of the bases could be better.
2010-08-19
Brains
Kids liked the eyes.
2010-08-19
Skeletons
Reaper's multiarmed skeletons. I really hate their pricing model, though.
2010-08-19
Skeletons
Closer view on the skellies.
2010-08-19
Golems
These are actually official Magic figures, I got cheap once they figured out card gamers don't buy figures.
2010-08-19
Golems
No, it's not a trick shot. There are two identical figures.
2010-08-19
Ghoul
This is also an old Magic figure.
2010-08-19
Ghoul
A better shot of the ghould
2010-08-19
Green Dragon
This is an old Grenadier figure. I quite like the old Grenadier dragons.
2010-08-19
Green Dragon
I was rather uninspired doing this. I actually like the base better than the figure...
2010-08-19
Green Dragon
The obligatory overhead view.
2010-08-19
Mage and bouncer
Another crappy shot. The mage is an old Magic figure, I can't recall where the other guy came from.
2012-03-14
Dragons
Two white dragons, very old Grenadier figures. These came with a pseudo-viking handler, which I have misplaced somewhere.
2012-03-14
Dragons
The eyes didn't turn out too well.
2012-03-14
Dragons
As usual, I was pretty uninspired when I did this. These figures are way too easy to just slap one color on and wash...
2012-03-14
Dragons
Another frontal view.
2012-03-14

Old Tentacle Face
Got these are freebies from somewhere. Trying to think of a use for them.
2013-03-13
Orc Invasion
The remaining 10-cent orcs are done.
2013-03-13
Orc Invasion
I should have given all of them these more interesting shields. Well, it can be used to mark out an elite squad now.
2013-03-13
Orc Invasion
There were actually three different plain shield colors, the two browns are just so similar they're pretty hard to tell apart.
2013-03-13
Orc Invasion
I forget which company was doing this promotion, but they were selling these for 10 cents a piece. So, naturally I had to get 100 of them. And I ordered a bunch of other stuff, so I guess the promotion worked.
2013-03-13
Orc Invasion
More orcy goodness. In case you were wondering, I never really liked green orcs. Orcs are people, not plants!
2013-03-13
Orc Invasion
The obligatory overhead view.
2013-03-13
Orc Invasion
To paint these shields, I joined the ABAS (American Bovine Appreciation Society) and carefully studied different hide patterns. Or maybe not...
2013-03-13
Orc Invasion
The figures were too many to turn around, but I stuck the camera on the other side and blindly took this shot anyway.
2013-05-21
Elemental Approach
This is the 3D-printed elemental figure I bought.

Elemental Approach

2013-05-21
Elemental Approach
I chose the cheapest material and it shows. Fortunately for this particular figure, having a sandy finish doesn't matter.
2013-05-21
Elemental Approach
Rear view of the elemental. The color choice was locked in when I spilled some light brown paint...
2013-05-21
Elemental Approach
Yeah, he's a bit boring. These can be surprisingly difficult to paint because the 3D printing process can create nooks and crannies that are extremely difficult to access.
2013-06-06
Ring Game
Orcs assemble. These look pretty nice, actually. Maybe I should have gotten some after all...
2013-06-06
Ring Game
Pelennor fields in process.
2013-06-19
Dwarves
The new dwarves are here! Well, not very new, these are plastics from Grenadier's Fantasy Warriors game.
2013-06-19
Dwarves
Stalwart spear-dwarves hold the line.
2013-06-19
Dwarves
Axedwarves ready to chop the opposition.
2013-06-19
Dwarves
A veritable forest of axe blades.
2013-06-19
Dwarves
I couldn't be bothered to find fitting transfers so I hand-painted all the shields. Badly.
2013-06-19
Dwarves
Given their age, I think these are actually pretty ok bulk troops. The only real downside is the integral 25mm square base.
2013-06-19
Dwarves
The obligatory overhead view.
2013-06-19
Dwarves
Dwarven legions ready to advance -- and I don't even like dwarves that much.

Orcy Goodness!
The latest horde addition assembles!
2013-07-28
Orcy Goodness!
In the front, some archers from Grenadiers Fantasy Warriors box set.
2013-07-28
Orcy Goodness!
They're looking strangely regimented for orcs.
2013-07-28
Orcy Goodness!
I did not remove the integral bases...
2013-07-28
Orcy Goodness!
Backing up the archers, some Battlemasters orcs from way back.
2013-07-28
Orcy Goodness!
They are a bit stiff.
2013-07-28
Orcy Goodness!
Encouraging their smaller cousins from the rear rank, some GW Warhammer starter box orcs.

Orcy Goodness!
Slice and dice.
2013-07-28
Orcy Goodness!
One of these is actually not a starter set orc. Can you spot it?
2013-07-28
Orcy Goodness!
The orcy armor design is... interesting.

2013-08-31
What's Up Doc?
I thought about putting some color variation on the fur, but their proportions are so weird that I couldn't figure out how to do it.
2013-08-31
What's Up Doc?
A little more ears would have been nice.
2013-08-31
What's Up Doc?
Watch out carrots of the world!
2013-08-31
What's Up Doc?
Ma and Pa Rabbit watch over their young.

The Sorceress
The model has a very rough texture. I probably should have paid the higher price to get this in a better medium.
2013-10-23
The Sorceress
The girl is a 3-D printed model I ordered off Shapeways.
2013-10-23
The Sorceress
It's an entirely onepiece model, with very interesting undercuts.
2013-10-23
The Sorceress
The stupid marble effect on the base was an experiment by me.
2013-10-23
The Sorceress
Ooh, trick shot. Actually, not that bad...
2013-12-10
Orcy Goodness!
More orcy goodness!
2013-12-10
Orcy Goodness!
These are all old Grenadier Fantasy Warriors plastics, probably by Nick Lund. I quite like his style.

Orcy Goodness!

Orcy Goodness!
The leader has a grudge against the 101 dwarfmatians.
2013-12-10
Orcy Goodness!
The poses are a bit stiff, but I think they are ok for bulk troops. Their size is rather more reasonable than recent orcs from you-know-who.
2013-12-10
Orcy Goodness!
Rank upon rank of orcy goodness.
2013-12-10
Orcy Goodness!
I did some minor freehand on the shields again. I really should buy more of the shields, they're pretty good.
2013-12-10
Orcy Goodness!
The blue shields are maybe a bit too bright.
2013-12-10
Orcy Goodness!
The plastic is actually pretty hard and difficult to glue. I had to use superglue to attach the shields.
2014-02-28
Orcy Goodness!
Another orc regiment done!
2014-02-28
Orcy Goodness!

I thought about adding shields for these guys but then I decided against it.
2014-02-28
Orcy Goodness!
Ready to take on all comers. These are the original Fantasy Warriors plastic orcs.
2014-02-28
Orcy Goodness!
They look pretty neat for orcs.
2014-02-28
Orcy Goodness!
Now all my Fantasy Warriors figures are finally painted. I only bought the game, what, maybe 20 years ago?
2014-02-28
Orcy Goodness!
The orcs of the P'essen tribe show their colors.
2014-02-28
Orcy Goodness!
More orcy shield styles.

Ethereals
Here are the BONES translucent minis painted up.
2014-08-26
Ethereals
The obligatory overhead view.
2014-08-26
Ethereals
The fire set, composed of a big burly fire elemental, a neat but very flimsy female fire demon and two... campfires? Calcifer will object to that remark.
2014-08-26
Ethereals
The ghostly ones.
2014-08-26
Ethereals
I think this is the best one of the set.
2014-08-26
Ethereals
She is very flimsy and bendy.
2014-08-26
Ethereals
If you look closely, there's some skeletons in there.
2014-08-26
Ethereals
Argh! The drybrushing brought the horrid mold lines to the fore!
2014-08-26
Ethereals
I painted the gravestone normally. No real problems with that.
2014-08-26
Ethereals
Closer look at the skeletons.

Orcy Nature Trip
We got one banging on them drums like a chimpanzee... that's the way you do it.
2014-08-31
Orcy Nature Trip
Here's the next batch of orcs.
2014-08-31
Orcy Nature Trip
They are roaming free at the Westwood Proving Grounds.
2014-08-31
Orcy Nature Trip
The obligatory overhead view.
2014-08-31
Orcy Nature Trip
There's a fair bit of archers included.
2014-08-31
Orcy Nature Trip
These are all from an old Warhammer starter box. I have no idea how I got hold of it...
2014-08-31
Orcy Nature Trip
The orcs have grown considerably in size over the years. Back when everything was metal, models this size would have been sold as ogres...
2014-08-31
Orcy Nature Trip
Then we get some of the more useful troops. Though I still wonder where the heck fantasy rules authors got the idea that two weapons was a bona fide mass combat tactic?
2014-08-31
Orcy Nature Trip
Lead by their nefarious boss, known only as Da Helmet.
2014-08-31
Orcy Nature Trip
The old orc one pose wonders has way less flashy poses. One or two of these might be okay, but an entire unit starts to look really funny, and not in a good way.
2014-09-30
Vive l'Orque!
The final batch of orks is done.
2014-09-30

2014-09-30
Vive l'Orque!
Hmm... interesting lineup.
2014-09-30
Vive l'Orque!
The commander and the flag bearer are actually multipart figures.
2014-09-30
Vive l'Orque!
Wait a minute! Where did that come from?
2017-05-17
Dork Tower
I bought these because they were on sale. I've no idea what to do with them, though...

Dork Tower

2017-05-17
Dork Tower
Characters from Dork Tower.
2017-05-17
Dork Tower
These were pretty interesting to paint.
2017-05-17
Dork Tower
Maybe I should have gone for a more cartoony look with flatter shades.
2017-05-17
Dork Tower
It's funny how the clothes are pretty realistic and cast with great detail while the flesh and hair are simple and cartoony.
2017-05-17
Dork Tower
The three guys... or two guys and a muskrat I guess.
2017-05-17
Dork Tower
The gals and Igor.
2017-05-17
Dork Tower
I think Igor is my fave mini from this set.
2017-05-17
Dork Tower
The cross is sculpted on the tunic, otherwise I probably would not have painted it.
2017-05-17
Dork Tower
In theory white and red is a great combo, but I find it hard to make it really work. Maybe I should try blacklining.
2017-05-17
Dork Tower
Glasses are another thing I still struggle doing.
2017-05-17
Dork Tower
And here's the gang.
2017-05-17
Dork Tower
Fortunately the goth sorceress came with a stiffening stand, otherwise it would have broken at the ankles already.

2017-12-03
LanceMate: Sir Nick
This spiral was actually harder to do than on the Firstborn Knights. Maybe because the shaft is slimmer?
2017-12-03
LanceMate: Sir Nick
Rear quarter view.
2017-12-03
LanceMate: Sir Nick
In retrospect, may be I should have added more trinkets.

2017-12-03
LanceMate: Sir Nick
Yeah, and no red nose either.

There's actually a pretty good variety of poses.
2018-02-27
Goblin Army
The secret masters are here!
2018-02-27
Goblin Army
The kids are adorable. They actually came with smaller slottas, but I have standardized all my basing.
2018-02-27
Goblin Army
They're mischievious little buggers... and the kids are worse.
2018-02-27
Goblin Army
The color palette is actually somewhat limited because I did them all in one batch.

Goblin Spider Riders
Spider riders from the old Skull Pass set.

Goblin Spider Riders
The obligaroty overhead view.
2018-04-02

These are pretty good for one-piece plastics. The small size helps...
2018-04-02
Goblin Spider Riders
The standard is bit of a mess...
2018-04-02
Goblin Spider Riders
As usual with goblin cavalry, the mounts are probably better fighters than the riders.
2018-04-02
Goblin Spider Riders
These would fit well with my swamp goblins.
2018-04-02
Goblin Spider Riders
I'm usually not a fan of embossed shields, but these are kinda okay.

I carved out the original rock and sculpted this on top of it.
2018-04-19
Uglug The Troll
I should have cut it off completely and sculpted a new one from scratch...
2018-04-19
Uglug The Troll
It's a bit earthy with no great contrast anywhere.
2018-04-19
Uglug The Troll
I actually like the brown on the loincloth, I should use it more.
2018-04-19
Uglug The Troll
I added the text to make it clearer what it's supposed to be.
2018-04-26
Zombies
Some Mantic zombies I did as a test piece. They look way better painted up.
2018-04-26
Zombies
These are basically just two colors and a wash. Really simple.
2018-05-13
Orcy Goodness!
Two orcy types from Bones.
2018-05-13
Orcy Goodness!
The biggest beef I have with these is that they are a pain to clean. A sharp scalpel is basically the only thing that works.

2018-06-07
Joint Anti-Elf Task Force
I'm finally done with these!
2018-06-16
Paladin
This is a Reaper BONES figure. Not really a fan of the stuff...
2018-06-16

The sword had to be straightened, but my main beef is that the detail level is just not there....

2018-07-01
LanceMate: Sir Astartes
